'The Neighborhood: A Farewell Special': When and how to watch the iconic sitcom's exclusive feature
'The Neighborhood' is set to bid an emotional adieu with a farewell special. The beloved series has enjoyed eight seasons of success, airing 156 episodes in total. The special is slated to air ahead of the Season 8 finale, which will release on May 11. Presented by ET, the feature will air on Monday, April 6, at 8 pm ET on CBS and will stream on Paramount+. 'The Neighborhood: A Farewell Special' will be hosted by Kevin Frasier and filmed in locations where the show was shot.
The special includes exclusive and candid interviews with cast members as they relive their time on the show while looking back at its cultural impact, as per Deadline. It also includes never-before-seen BTS footage and archival interviews that highlight some of the show's most memorable moments. Fans also get a look at the emotional final few filming days — the last table read, the final tapings, and the emotional goodbyes. Bill Martin and Mike Schiff, Aaron Kaplan, Wendi Trilling, Cedric the Entertainer, and Eric Rhoner serve as the showrunners and executive producers.
Per Rotten Tomatoes, the show's logline reads, "When Dave Johnson and his family arrive from Michigan, they're unfazed that their new dream home is located in a community quite different from their previous small town. However, their opinionated next-door neighbor, Calvin Butler, is wary of the newcomers, certain that they'll disrupt the culture on the block. Dave realizes that fitting in with the new community is more complex than he had expected, but if he can find a way to connect with Calvin, there's an excellent chance of making the new neighborhood a great place to live."
The sitcom first premiered in 2018 with 21 episodes. The reception was such that the network soon renewed the slice-of-life drama for another season. After the seventh installment's premiere in 2024, CBS greenlit the show for a final season in March 2025. Season 8 premiered last year in October, and EP Schiff spoke about concluding the series on an emotional note. "We can finally head toward a climax that we don't have to write our way past," Schiff told TVLine. "It's nice to be able to just get there. To me, the gold standard is The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which was just a half hour where everybody gets fired, they all sing 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary,' and we cry, and she turns off the lights. That's the kind of emotional resonance we want," he added.
