'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' 3 gets massive update and is set to air sooner than you think
The vast universe of 'The Lord of the Rings' created by J. R. R. Tolkien continues to captivate the imagination of countless individuals across the globe. Prime Video's 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' series has also been a massive hit. The first two seasons of the show raked in around 170 million viewers worldwide on the streaming platform and were also identified as one of the chief motivating factors behind new subscription signups.
Thereafter, it was just a matter of time before 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' was renewed for another installment. The official nod came in February 2025, and principal photography commenced at the Shepperton Studios in the UK around the same time. Although the upcoming season was previously believed to arrive on Prime Video sometime in 2027, a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter claims that the release window has been brought forward. Season 3 will now hit screens later this year. The news was broken by a source close to the production, increasing anticipation for the new season.
The upcoming season is expected to feature a major time jump from the events of the sophomore season and the official plot synopsis reads, "Jumping forward several years from the events of season two, season three takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last." It is worth noting that in the scheme of things within Tolkien's universe, the War of the Elves took place before the clash featured in the prologue of director Peter Jackson's 'The Lord of the Rings' films, referred to as the War of the Last Alliance. It has been confirmed that Charlie Vickers will return to play Sauron.
Morfydd Clark will once again be seen as Galadriel, while Robert Aramayo reprises his role as Elrond. Apart from the returning stars, the third season will also feature a bunch of newcomers, including 'Stranger Things' star Jamie Campbell Bower, Zubin Varla, Andrew Richardson, Eddie Marsan of 'Ray Donovan' fame, and Adam Young. Their character descriptions are yet to be officially announced. Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne remain the showrunners and executive producers of the project. They are joined by executive producers Justin Doble, Kate Hazell, and Lindsay Weber, alongside director and executive producer Charlotte Brandstrom. All the episodes of 'Rings of Power' are exclusively available on Prime Video.
