When will 'Pennyworth' Season 2 air on EPIX? Here's what to expect after the compelling mid-season finale
It was a crisp four-episode Season 2 of 'Pennyworth' on EPIX. With the mid-season finale done, all the attention now shifts to when the hit Batman prequel series will return. The new season wastes no time in picking up from where it left off and there was a lot to look forward to. The series chronicling the life and times of Bruce Wayne's butler, Alfred Pennyworth, played by the dapper Jack Bannon shifts to life in an England ensnared in a chaotic civil war.
Almost every main character on the show received their due, thanks to ample screentime. Lord James Harwood (Jason Flemyng), now heading the Raven Union is keen to usurp London. Aided by the sneaky and conniving Colonel Salt (Edward Hogg), the duo plans to unleash the stormcloud project for genocide. Bet Sykes (Paloma Faith) is on the run after murdering a high authority figure in the penitentiary trying to rescue a friend and potential love interest in Katie Browning (Jessye Romeo).
Martha Kane (Emma Paetz) and Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) finally begin their relationship, while the main man, Alfred, is in dire straits. He's got blood on his hands, his mother doesn't want to leave London and settle in America, Bazza's dead and he's working with Gulliver Troy (James Purefoy). It's almost petty robbery, but he needs the money and Troy is the only option. The four episodes aired so far have a lot of explaining to do as they have set up better character arcs than Season 1.
The show's return is slated for 2021, but an exact date isn't set in stone yet. In all probability, the show might return sometime in February or March. Starting off with Alfred's next mission with Troy, to Martha Kane's pregnancy, there's more than enough to look forward to. The storyline also hints that not everything is smooth at the Ravens camp with Salt up to some form of wretched scheming. Bet Sykes clearly has a mission and her storyline needs more explanation.
The fourth episode, 'The Hunted Fox', also introduced viewers to Lucius Fox and while we do know he's a spy, we have no idea whether he is working for the English League or the CIA. The show will also have to explain his relationship with Thomas Wayne.
Pennyworth' has been one of EPIX's ground-breaking shows last year and despite the pressure to repeat the same success, or perhaps go one step further, showrunners Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon have promised another solid season.
'Pennyworth' Season 2 will return in 2021.
