When will Lee Cronin's 'The Mummy' be available for streaming? Here's what we know
Lee Cronin's 'The Mummy' will soon wreak havoc on big screens. Backed by Warner Bros. and Blumhouse, the movie will be available in some territories by April 17, 2026, and two days later, it will be available in most theaters nationwide, with international release on April 15. However, its theatrical release date has long been known by film buffs, but its streaming schedule is somewhat of a mystery. Considering the trajectory of past horror releases by the same production companies, the movie is expected to be available for streaming on HBO Max and not on Netflix. It may also be available for digital rentals or purchase on Amazon Prime Video.
Mostly, when people think of the movie 'The Mummy', their mind goes to the adventure franchise, featuring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in the early 2000s. The upcoming release by director Lee Cronin and producers James Wan and Jason Blum has nothing similar to the blockbuster series apart from the title. The scales are not as grand as the previous movies, where the main characters awakened Egyptian mummies in foreign lands and dealt with the aftermaths. Here, the scope is limited to a family, but it promises to be scarier. "The key difference is that it's a really scary mummy movie," Cronin shared. "It's also a mummy movie partly set in a domestic context. So rather than it being, necessarily, about grand secrets linked to politics and hierarchy, it's actually a small family secret."
The film follows the family of Charlie (Jack Reynor) and Larissa Cannon (Laia Costa), parents to three children named Maud (Billie Roy), Sebastián (Shylo Molina), and Katie (Natalie Grace). During a visit to Egypt, Katie gets lost. After eight years, the parents get a call from officials informing them that Katie has been found in mysterious circumstances. She and 58 others were uncovered living in a sarcophagus. Despite reservations, Cannons take back their evidently changed daughter to their home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This kickstarts a series of events that change a heartwarming family reunion into a horrid nightmare.
Cronin assures that this movie, like the others, will feature “mummification,” but it will be of a different kind and have a distinct purpose. “When you think traditionally about mummies, you think about pharaohs, kings, queens, the rich,” the director explained. “One of the things we talked about early on was: What if it was about regular people?” He cites ‘The Invisible Man’ and ‘The Wolf Man’ as inspirations for this project. The movie has been made with the big screen in mind and will prioritize its theatrical release. Tickets can be purchased on Fandango, Cinemark, AMC, IMAX, and other local sites. Past trends suggest that the movie will head to streaming 40 to 60 days after release. It can be expected that the movie will be available on Premium Video-on-Demand (VoD) subscriptions by June–July 2026, and may be viewed on streaming platforms at the end of 2026 or early 2027. Besides that, the movie has a placeholder listing on Apple TV, hinting that it may be available at some point. The movie stars Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, and Verónica Falcón in leading roles.
