Anne Hathaway battles her inner demons in riveting 'Mother Mary' trailer
Anne Hathaway battles her inner demons as a pop diva in A24's music drama, 'Mother Mary'. Directed by David Lowery of the 'A Ghost Story' fame, the movie follows Hathaway, a pop star facing a severe existential crisis, and turns to an old friend and fashion designer, Sam (Michaela Coel).
In the gripping trailer, Hathaway is seen approaching Sam, who drops in a cocky, "So you've come crawling back to me," when she sees the diva. What follows is a spooky and riveting clip that not just highlights the clear rift between the two but also a sense of horror in the offing. The movie, described as a "Psychosexual pop thriller", features original songs by top stars Charli xcx, FKA Twigs (who also stars), and Jack Antonoff. Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, and Sian Clifford round up the rest of the cast.
"It is a movie I am sure will provoke a lot of strong feelings, in every possible direction," Lowery said last year when talking about the flick, according to The Guardian. "It feels very true to who I am, and very close to me, but it is also consistently surprising me in ways that I did not anticipate."
Earlier, Hathway shared her thoughts on the role when she graced the cover of Vogue. "What struck me right away, reading the script, is that you can’t ‘perform’ Mother Mary. If I got the part, I would have to become material that David could craft with. … I had to submit to being a beginner," she said. "The humility of that — showing up every day knowing you’re going to suck. And it has to be okay. You’re not ‘bad.’ You’re just a beginner. Getting to that mindset — I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome. But it was hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard."
“It’s very brave work that she’s done,” Coel said, lavishing praise on Hathaway. "The physicality she had to learn in preparation for this job — and it’s not just us in [that scene], it’s the crew, it’s the producers, and so of course this day was terrifying, a little monster on her shoulder, but no one realized until after the first take. And then to keep doing it — take after take. That requires a lot of strength. Gallons and tons."
'Mother Mary' hits cinemas in April 2026.
