Will Shane and Ilya reunite? ‘Heated Rivalry’ cast teases what to expect from finale: ‘There is a...’
As the show ‘Heated Rivalry’ is headed towards its final two episodes, anticipation is running wild. Episode 4 marked a turning point for the gay hockey romance drama. It pulled Shane and Ilya apart while deepening their emotions. As the adaptation of Rachel Reid’s novel ‘Game Changer’ is nearing its end, viewers are left wondering one thing. Will the show follow the books closely or adopt the subtle changes teased by the cast? Either way, the final stretch promises longing, conflict, and a grand emotional payoff. These are the things that have defined the Crave and HBO Max show from the start.
Much of the excitement stems from Shane and Ilya’s chemistry, which appeared unresolved in the latest episode of ‘Heated Rivalry’. With episode 4, their secret affair ended, and Shane even attempted to move on with actress Rose Landry. Yet, the final moments clearly depicted that his bond with Ilya was far from over. Actor Connor Storrie, who plays Ilya Rozano, summed it up in an interview with TheWrap. He said, “I think just our natural concoction together makes it so that when we’re not speaking, there’s thoughts, there’s an internal life that’s vivid and active and shared.” The shared internal world will likely strengthen and set the stage for reflection, tension, and possibly a reunion in the finale.
While speaking about the emotional depth of ‘Heated Rivalry’, Hudwon Williams, who plays Shane Hollander, said, “In the character, I have a seriousness that I don’t have in real life, but we always felt like we were doing a show that had weight and depth. Obviously, there’s fun, and there’s revelry, there’s a sort of celebration that’s in the book and the show itself, too, but it felt like in those moments, we’re kind of in a little level of despair and yearning that’s uncomfortable. I don’t feel like we shied away from the depth of the reality of what these characters will be going through.” It’s a strong possibility that the finale will feature moments for the main cast that balance intensity and heart.
Another layer that has added meaning to the finale is the show’s cultural impact. Co-star François Arnaud’s appearance at an NHL game to promote the show, where the league aired the ‘Heated Rivalry’ trailer during Pride Night, showed how far the show has come. While recalling that moment, Storrie said, “Even if it’s just an extra sense of mindfulness, I think that’s a huge success.” This real-life moment mirrored the theme the show continues to explore: identity, acceptance, and the unseen pressures that shape the characters’ lives on and off the ice.
As the final episode approaches, fans remain curious about how faithfully the series will follow the remaining beats of the novel. Storrie shared, “From what I remember, we do the book through and through,” while Williams cut him off by saying, “We do not.” The latter, then clarified further, “There is a slight departure. But I think it is very diligent and true to the writing … pretty true.” With this teasing ambiguity and the emotional stakes rising, the season appears set for a finale that will honor the source material while keeping viewers guessing. 'Heated Rivalry' continues Friday nights on Crave and HBO Max.
