Will there be 'Heated Rivalry' Season 2? Here's everything we know about HBO Max's new sports romance
It's not every day that you get a queer romance drama show that's too hot to handle. Initially coming off Canadian streamer Crave, 'Heated Rivalry' was soon taken up by HBO Max for distribution in the United States and Australia. Soon after its debut on November 28, 'Heated Rivalry' went on to create ripples across the streaming platform owing to its explicit depiction of sex and a burgeoning romance between two sports stars who are quite unlike each other at first glance. As the show continues to draw audience admiration, speculations surrounding a potential sophomore season are at an all-time high.
As of this writing, 'Heated Rivalry' hasn't yet been renewed for a second season, as confirmed by Teen Vogue. The show, which is based on the eponymous second book from Canadian author Rachel Reid's 'Game Changers' series, features Texan actor Connor Storrie as Boston Raiders captain Ilya Rozanov and Korean-Canadian actor Hudson Williams as Shane Hollander, the captain of Montreal Metros. Between themselves, these two characters are star players in Major League Hockey. The six-part series has been scripted and directed by Jacob Tierney of 'Letterkenny' fame.
The plot of 'Heated Rivalry', as reported by Variety, follows Hollander and Rozanov as the two are inevitably drawn to each other in circles of passion. The official synopsis reads, "What begins as a secret fling between two fresh-faced rookies evolves into a years-long journey of love, denial, and self-discovery. Over the next eight years, the pair chase glory on the ice while struggling to navigate their feelings off it. Torn between the sport they live for and the love they can't ignore, Shane and Ilya must decide if there is room in their fiercely competitive world for something as fragile and as powerful as real love."
The Crave/HBO Max show debuted with the first two episodes, following a weekly episodic release every Friday. The summary for the upcoming third episode, the title of which is yet to be declared, reads, "A high-stakes career collides with love when a chance meeting ignites a spark." Although it does seem that fans of the show will have to contend with the six episodes of the debut season for now. However, Reid has been quite vocal in the past about continuing the story of Hollander and Rozanov. A September 15, 2025, blog post from the author mentioned, "Of course I'm hoping for more seasons, but if one season is all we get, I am forever grateful to Jacob and his production partner, Brendan Brady, and to Bell Media/Crave for giving me six incredible episodes."
It is interesting to note that in case Crave decides to greenlight a sophomore season for 'Heated Rivalry', they would have no dearth of narrative material to choose from. Reid revisited the Hollander-Rozanov romance in the sixth book in her 'Game Changers' series titled 'The Long Game'. Moreover, Reid's literary world is remarkably interlinked, thereby making sure that Hollander-Rozanov turns up at important corners every once in a while.
