‘The Drama’ plot twist might no longer be a secret after latest controversy and not everyone is okay with it
‘The Drama’ finds itself surrounded by drama right now. The upcoming A24 project, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, was already on the radar thanks to its high-profile leads and a premise that hints at a relationship hitting a breaking point. But things have taken a turn in recent days. The story revolves around an engaged couple whose stable relationship begins to fracture during what should be a celebratory stretch leading up to their wedding. Something unexpected surfaces, and once it’s out, there’s no putting it back in the box. The film sets this moment during a game where participants are pushed to confess the worst thing they’ve ever done. However, the confession, delivered by Emma (Zendaya), leaves everyone shaken, especially her fiancé, Charlie (Pattinson).
In the trailer, what she admits leaves everyone visibly shaken, and soon after, their relationship begins to crack, with Charlie growing uneasy around her. Early screenings have already taken place ahead of the film’s wider rollout, yet official reviews are being held back until Tuesday. This suggests the studio is being extra careful about what gets out and when. And while the studio has stayed silent, reports have started to surface elsewhere. A recent piece from TMZ has stirred conversation by pointing to what could be the film’s main plot twist, and it’s not light material. According to that report, the story may involve a past plan for a school shooting that never actually took place, tied to Emma, and that is what the entire fiasco is about.
Tom Mauser, whose son Daniel was among those killed during the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, has spoken out through TMZ. He expressed concern about how such a subject might be handled in a mainstream film. His worry centers on the idea that including a storyline about a planned attack, even one that was never carried out, could risk softening public opinion toward those responsible for such acts. Notably, the claim hasn’t been officially verified, not by the studio or filmmakers. What complicates matters further is the film’s tone, which doesn’t seem to stick to a single lane. Zendaya herself described the project during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, noting that “It is a romantic comedy in many ways, but it’s also a drama. Everybody has their own kind of feelings leaving the theatre, especially with the big twist.”
She added, “There’s so many conversations that are had after you watch it.” Moreover, there are also smaller details that people have started connecting. A Boston Globe report noted that Emma comes from a military family, with her father described as a decorated veteran. That background might help clarify how she became familiar with firearms from an early age. Add to that casting calls for high school students and the inclusion of YaYa Gosselin as a younger version of Emma, and suddenly, fans are building dark theories. And yet, despite all the noise, one thing remains clear: the film’s central twist has not been officially confirmed. The full picture is still under wraps until the movie actually hits theaters on April 3.
