'The Pitt' creator reveals what's next for Supriya Ganesh's Samira Mohan in Season 3
'The Pitt' Season 2 finale was highly anticipated as fans wanted to see Dr. Robby finishing his last shift at the PTMC before heading for his three-month-long sabbatical. Viewers were also curious to find out how the hit medical drama handles Dr. Samira Mohan's departure. On April 2, the series confirmed that actress Supriya Ganesh, who played the fan-favorite character for two seasons, won't be returning for Season 3. The show's third installment will take place four months after Season 2, in November, which falls a month after Robby's return from his break.
Since Mohan was in her final year of residency at the PTMC in Season 2, her residency will still be ongoing in November. Fans have been trying to figure out how the next season will explain Mohan's absence. But the series creator, R. Scott Gemmill, offered a simple answer when he spoke to TVLine after the finale. As each season of 'The Pitt' centers on a single 15-hour shift at the hospital, each episode covers roughly one hour inside the ER. Hence, Gemmill revealed that Mohan just won't be working that day.
In the last few episodes of 'The Pitt' Season 2, Mohan was seen struggling to keep up with the fast pace and the demanding work of the emergency room. The finale episode, titled '9:00 P.M.,' depicts Robby checking in with Mohan at the end of their Fourth of July shift and asking if she has decided on an elective. She replies that she hasn’t before adding, "Maybe I will go into geriatrics." Robby had earlier suggested that she consider a career in geriatrics after seeing her caring for an older couple in episode 12. Robby calls it a "smart choice" and enquires about Mohan's lingering tensions with her mother, which led to a panic attack earlier in the season. Mohan shares that she's not on speaking terms with her mom, then apologizes for letting her personal problems distract her from work. The two part on a good note as Mohan wishes Robby a safe trip and is last seen enjoying the 4th of July fireworks with her colleagues on the rooftop.
In the same interview, Gemmill highlighted Mohan's challenges in adapting to the ER's stressful environment. "She struggled a little bit, and that’s part of the reality of medicine — some people do better than others. She’s very good at connecting with patients, but she doesn’t move as quickly as is expected these days in the ER." The showrunner further added that Mohan's exit is in line with how hospitals operate in the real world. "Due to the nature of a teaching hospital, a lot of people move on. That’s part of the fabric of the show. One of the reasons we did a four-month jump was so we didn’t have to move everyone out. We love these actors, we love writing for them, and the audience enjoys them, so it’s bittersweet when we have to see someone leave, but it’s part of the process." 'The Pitt' Season 3 is expected to return in January 2027, but an official confirmation is still pending. Till then, fans can rewatch both seasons of the award-winning medical drama on HBO Max.
