'Watson' Season 2 Episode 19 raises questions as major Sherlock Holmes twist sets the stage for finale
Fans were dealt a huge blow when it was announced that CBS was cancelling 'Watson' due to poor ratings. Despite the news, Season 2 continues the thrilling ride that made many fall in love with the procedural drama. The penultimate episode, titled 'The Rule of Three,' saw the arrival of one of the biggest characters in literary history- Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock was killed off in the show after apparently falling to his death. The series kick-started around a year after the supposed death of the world's most famous detective. Since then, Sherlock, played by Robert Carlyle, has made multiple appearances, but all of them have been speculated to be a figment of Watson's imagination. This episode flipped the theory on its head when Sherlock arrived as a patient in 'Holmes Clinic.'
During the show's last few moments, Shinwell Johnson (Ritchie Coster) was called into the ER to treat a patient who had a paper with the administrative aide's name on it. “There’s some guy down there, and he’s in bad shape. We don’t know who he is, we don’t know why he’s here, but he’s holding a piece of paper, and it’s got your name on it, and your phone number,” a staff member informed Shinwell. What awaited him in the ER was shocking. The patient in question was none other than Sherlock. “My god,” Shinwell said, walking over to the patient. “Sherlock? Guv? Are you alright?” The famous detective looked at him and asked, “Do I know you?” It seems that the detective remembers nothing about his past, so does that mean he is suffering from amnesia? Fans will have to wait till the series finale to get their answers.
Elsewhere, Dr. John Watson and Dr. Mary Morstan (Rochelle Aytes) set off on their trip to a neurologist to treat the former's glioblastoma. It was allegedly this tumor that allowed Watson to see Sherlock. During their trip, the duo had to help an intern deliver Lauren's triplets while on the phone. Dr. Fiori then arrived on the scene and took over delivery duties from the terrified intern. Even after a successful delivery, Lauren remained in danger because of excessive bleeding. Watson and Mary diagnosed Lauren with placenta abrasion, and she was promptly cured. Adam (Peter Mark Kendall) was overjoyed to have both his beloved and his children safe and sound with him. The babies were named Olivia, Isabella, and Hamish. Dr. Ingrid Derian (Eve Harlow) spent the entire episode being questioned by authorities over her claim about killing Beck in self-defence. Nurse Carlin DaCosta was then seen proposing to Shinwell after going through a harrowing experience after being exposed to HIV infection.
The show will return for its season finale, "The Cobalt Fissure," on Sunday, May 3, 2026, on CBS. As per TV Insider, the finale's synopsis reads, “A seemingly random murder outside of UHOP sets the stage for the arrival of someone from Watson [Morris Chestnut] and Sherlock Holmes’ [Robert Carlyle] past.” Fans are hoping that the series finale will tie up several loose ends. Will Ingrid be apprehended? How will Watson react to Sherlock's comeback? What happened to Sherlock? One thing is for sure: the legendary duo will grace the screens for an epic farewell.
