'Fallout' Season 2 Episode 6 completely changes meaning of ‘bottle caps’ in a way we could've never imagined
For the inhabitants of the post-apocalyptic wasteland in 'Fallout' Season 2, life is far from being easy. On one hand, there is the constant struggle for survival amid an inhospitable environment. On the other hand, the sinister forces of the Enclave are always on the lookout to exterminate the remaining living beings who have the misfortune to be outside the precious Vault-Tec bunkers. In such a world, where traditional forms of currency are no longer in circulation, something else takes their place: bottle caps.
As recounted by IGN, the recently aired Episode 6 of 'Fallout's sophomore season had the infamous Hank MacLean, played by Kyle MacLachlan, explaining the futility of human conflict to Ella Purnell's Lucy MacLean. He goes on to explain that human beings fight wars over seemingly trivial reasons, citing the bottle caps used as currency in the world of 'Fallout'. The Prime Video show doesn't make this up, and bottle caps are prevalent throughout the show's video game source material, i.e., 'Fallout 1'.
Slashfilm noted that bottle caps are used as an acceptable form of currency in the 'Fallout' franchise because they are both difficult to come by and durable. We have to keep in mind that following the destruction caused by the last Great War and the apocalyptic bomb explosions, regular modes of currency were severely depleted. This caused the remaining inhabitants to look for an item that was difficult to counterfeit while also being scarce to make it valuable, and bottle caps served both these functions.
Furthermore, bottle caps weren't the only forms of currency depicted in the video game franchise; they hold supremacy in the world created by the Prime Video series. Another work of fiction that featured bottle caps as a medium of exchange was Scrooge McDuck's story 'Tralla La', published in 'Uncle Scrooge #6' and written by Carl Barks. Across the Tralla La region, bottle caps were widely used in trade.
Well, using bottle caps as a form of currency in a game is a different thing. However, this also happened in real life. Both these creative expressions were strangely imitated in 2005, when several beer companies tried to convince Cameroonians to buy their products. The allure of winning expensive prizes printed on the insides of bottle caps was also introduced, leading individuals to collect them as valuable items that were then exchanged like traditional currency. Elsewhere, 'Fallout' season two is gearing up for its impending finale. The broken relationship between Lucy and The Ghoul is expected to be featured prominently. All episodes of 'Fallout' are exclusively available to stream on Prime Video, and the second-season finale will drop on February 4, 2026.
