Who is Anna Merrick? 'Reacher' Season 4 Episode 3 ending explained as new conspiracy comes to light
'Reacher,' starring Alan Ritchson, returned with Season 4, and after three episodes, fans have more questions than before. It was already announced that the season would adapt Lee Child's 13th novel, 'Gone Tomorrow.' Similar to the novel, the latest season also began with a suspicious-looking woman shooting herself in front of Jack Reacher in a subway. Before the woman took the drastic step, Jack tried to help her, but she refused and left him with the haunting line, “No one can help me now.” After meeting with the detectives, he realized that the woman was a federal employee named Anna Merrick. During his meetings with the detectives, Jack learned that the investigation was being stalled until the arrival of feds from D.C., which further intrigued him.
The feds arrived and asked Jack whether Anna gave him anything before she died. Later, two men attacked Jack and asked whether Anna had given him a flash drive. Though Jack had nothing, he soon realized that this wasn't a regular suicide. He also found out that of the four people present in the subway at the time of Anna's death, one had gone missing. Jack caught up with Jacob, Anna's brother, who refused to believe that his sister would end her life. According to him, she loved her son Ben too much to take such a step. Jacob also told him that Anna worked as an HR representative for an Army general.
Jack cooked up a plan and bought a flash drive containing an art student's sketches. He then approached the goons that threatened him earlier, claiming he had Anna's flash drive. They took him to their boss, Lila. The young woman revealed she was looking for documents Anna was supposedly going to give her to blackmail her father. She was suffering from leukemia, and a bone marrow donation was her only chance at survival. Lila's estranged father was her only potential donor. All she knew was that a Delta Force operative named John, who was posted in 1998 in Indonesia, was her father. Anna revealed to her that John was none other than the North Carolina congressman John Sampson, who was now a frontrunner for his party's presidential nomination. The documents would have proved he was her father and forced him to donate for the sake of his career. Jack then decided to look into John, but before he could make any progress, he was abducted.
In Episode 2, titled 'Cage Fight,' Jack found himself trapped in a cage with Tamara, one of the detectives involved in the case, and Jacob. The kidnappers were seemingly from the CIA and wanted the drive as well as Lila's location. Jack then took down the kidnappers and was helped by freelance journalist Russell Plum (Kevin Weisman). After Russell became privy to the details of the case, he concluded that Lila was a Pentagon employee, and that there were possibly military-related secrets on the flash drive. Jack decided to meet up with John and got the opportunity at a campaign event. He heard the politician tell the crowd, "A person can be a little too clever for their own good. You are better off telling the truth and taking your medicine.”
Jack then interrogated John, who rejected Lila's claim. He even gave up his DNA to prove his innocence. He also refused Russell's military-secret theory, claiming that Anna was just an HR clerk and did not have access to such high-level information. The interaction may not have led to any concrete results, but it did help Jack cross paths with Nolan Cahill (Chris Owens), John's Chief of Staff, the missing witness from the fateful night Anna ended her life.
The third episode, titled 'One Small Step,' saw the group being attacked by both the CIA agents and outsiders after Russell falsely claimed on 4Chan that he had Anna's flash drive. While fighting with the armed group, Jack found Lila's address and visited the woman. Lila came clean and confessed that John wasn't her father, and she didn't have leukemia. The flash drive contained evidence of John's part in attacking and killing civilians in Indonesia. Nolan was reportedly John's commanding officer. Lila wanted all of John's misdeeds to be exposed before he reached the White House. This conversation ended in an ambush as another unidentified group attacked them. Jack handled it all and escaped.
Tamara, Russell, and Jacob found Anna's spare ID in her car and learned that she had Level 8 security clearance, much higher than a normal clerk should have had. Jack met John again, and the latter denied Lila's allegation. He also refused to believe that Nolan was in the subway when Anna killed herself. Both of them went to confront Nolan in a rooftop bar. Rather than answering the claims, the Chief of Security said to John, “You would have made a good president,” and jumped to his death. Now Jack has two deaths to solve, and several people looking for him. The remaining episodes will reveal how Jack finds his way out of trouble.
