LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA : As a result of changes within Warner Bros Discovery, there has been much speculation in recent years about the future of the DC universe. The decision to cancel 'Batgirl,' a film about Barbara Gordon originally planned as an HBO Max exclusive, was one of the most unexpected outcomes of this development. The film was already in post-production when it was put on hold, and the decision not to release it at all took fans by surprise.

Peter Safran, the current CEO of DC Studios, explained the decision for the cancelation, which was made before he and James Gunn took the job, in a press conference at the announcement of the 'Chapter One: Gods & Monsters' series. As part of their intentions for the franchise, he also hinted that Batgirl will "inevitably" play a role.

Why was 'Batgirl' canceled?

With a script by Christina Hodson, Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi directed the movie 'Batgirl.' Leslie Grace would have played Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, JK Simmons would have played Commissioner James Gordon, and Michael Keaton would have played Bruce Wayne/Batman. Ivory Aquino, who plays Alysia Yeoh, and Jacob Scipio, Rebecca Front, Corey Johnson, and Ethan Kai, who were cast in roles that are yet unclear, all joined the ensemble.

According to comicbook.com, a Warner Bros. spokesperson said in a statement, "Batgirl's a character that inevitably we will include in our story," Safran explained. "On the Batgirl front, it's not about late in the process of the film getting canceled. I saw the movie, and there are a lot of incredibly talented people in front of and behind the camera on that film. But that film was not releasable, and it happens sometimes. That film was not releasable. I actually think that [president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David] Zaslav and the team made a very bold and courageous decision to cancel it because it would have hurt DC. It would have hurt those people involved."

'Y'all released 2 garbage versions of Justice League'

Fans quickly took to Twitter to express their disappointment and anger towards this decision. One fan said, "This is your DC co-head preaching about one particular vision from two talented filmmakers not trusting them and agreeing their art should never be seen… stan away." Another user said, "Call BS.. there a lot of crud dc films they didn’t cancel those." A user quipped, "Acting as if their every other release has been a gold mine Somebody get this generic Wolf of Wall Street background character outta here." One user recalled previous films of DC that didn't do too well, "I wasn't really even looking forward to Batgirl but TBF - DC also has Superman : the quest for peace , Batman and Robin, Green Lantern, Birds of Prey and Joss Whedens Justice League in their Library. I highly doubt this would be the film to hurt them." Another user slammed DC saying, "Buddy DC has been hurting for years now I don’t think batgirl was gonna do any more damage than it already had." One user commented, "Y'all released 2 garbage versions of Justice League and still employ Ezra Miller with no qualms but **Batgirl** would have been the thing that hurt DC??????" One user said, "But Black Adam was? Considering keeping Ezra isn't going to hurt DC? Just kissing up to Zaslav." A user chimed in saying, "it would have hurt DC" but The Flash is still going..."
