'Westworld' fans enraged by 'Game of Thrones' references slam HBO for not letting sleeping dragons lie
Spoilers for 'Westworld' Season 3 Episode 2 - 'The Winter Line'
'Westworld' made some pretty clear references to 'Game of Thrones' this episode — from the episode title to cameo appearances by DB Weiss and Dan Benioff and even the inclusion of everyone's favorite 'Game of Thrones' dragon, Drogon himself.
Obviously intended as more of a gag than anything, what it has managed to do instead is rile up the wrath of fans who are still mad about how 'Game of Thrones' ended.
"Did #Westworld just cameo 'Game of Thrones', Drogon plus the directors David Benioff & Daniel Weiss? Implying that 'Game of Thrones' was a creation in this world hahahaha. I bet people are still angry with directors tho," said one fan on Twitter and they couldn't be more right — fans are not happy.
HBO's final season of 'Game of Thrones' left a lot of fans upset. It's been almost a year since the show ended, but HBO's reference to the series has kicked up the hornet's nest. "Why are David and Dan in this? I hate this?" wrote a viewer.
"Screw Benioff and Weiss for ruining 'Game of Thrones', screw 'Westworld' for letting them make light of it, screw HBO for throwing it in the fan's faces, and screw Martin for entrusting his series to these ***clowns," wrote another fan, replying to a tweet about an entire blog post dedicated to rage about the cameo.
"HBOs got LOTSA NERVE reminding us of drogon and how that all ended," claimed a viewer.
Some fans are mad not just over the cameo, but at the worry that after cowboys, samurais, and World War II, medieval fantasy may be the next theme park to be featured on 'Westworld'.
"WHY WERE D&D FROM GOT IN WESTWORLD??? CAN THEY LEAVE MY SHOWS ALONE PLEASE AND NOT RUIN THEM????" raged one viewer online.
Even people who haven't seen the episode yet were upset by HBO's 'Game of Thrones' reference, writing, "I haven't started watching S3 of 'Westworld' yet, but I saw an easter egg from tonight's episode and it sort of completely ruined my life. I hate everything, my life has been a lie. Literally shaking and crying guys. How could they do this to us. It's already dead! Let it be!"
Even fans amused by the gag aren't entirely happy with it, with one saying, "Damn you #Westworld sliding Benoit & Weiss in there. At the same time, it's pretty epic."
Some fans are even theorizing that 'Game of Thrones' was, in fact, a 'Westworld' simulation all along, with one saying, "Somehow, a simple crossover cameo on #Westworld unintentionally managed to explain EVERYTHING bad about GOT"
