'Weathering' Review: Netflix thriller short film is a slick drama that keeps you hooked
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Netflix is on a spree of dropping amazing content for its customers. The streamer is getting much-needed acclaim with 'Beef.' Thriller movies have an element of surprise for the audience. They are compelling and have an exciting factor. The OTT platform has now dropped new thriller 'Weathering.'
The 20-minute short film is written and directed by Megalyn Echikunwoke. It stars Jermaine Fowler, Alexis Louder, James Tupper, and Alfre Woodard. The official synopsis of 'Weathering' states, "After losing her baby and nearly her life during labor, a journalist unravels amid disturbing visions and chilling attacks as she grieves alone at home." If you liked watching 'The Devil All the Time' and 'The Guilty', then 'Weathering' should be on the top of your viewing list.

The horror factor
The short film follows a to-be-mother and journalist, Gemina, who during labor faces some complications. Unfortunately, she loses her baby girl and dips into depression and stress. The journalist, after the horrific tragedy, starts to get visions that she killed her baby. She faces difficulty differentiating between reality and visions and thinks someone is trying to kill her
The short film is on point and takes the audience straight into the plot. There are various disturbing visions that won't be suitable for everyone. The thriller gets deeper and darker as the story continues and takes a horror turn. Gemina's visions might be a scary element in the film, and the sharp cuts and editing make the audience jump during the scenes.
Gemina's realization
As the story continues, Gemina concludes that the person after her life is none other but herself. Her partner leaves after the incident leaving a mark on her mind and making it difficult for her to control her emotions. In the end, Gemina comes clean about the fact that her daughter died due to medical complications and it was not her fault. She lets go of the pain and blame and begins a new life.
Overall the film is great and has a powerful message hidden in the end. It tends to scare the audience with its disturbing vision. But the story feels incomplete in some way. At a certain point it might be confusing for the audience. It may not be the most exciting movie, but it is nonetheless a slick drama with many impelling shots and scenes.
