'Vikings' to end after season 6 but here's why fans aren't entirely disappointed

'Vikings' will head to Valhalla after season 6, but it will not be the end of it.

Since the show started in 2013, it did not take long for the History Channel hit to become a global sensation. Highly compared with 'Game of Thrones', 'Vikings' had its own story to tell, revolving around protagonist Ragnar Lothbrok.

Currently, in season 5, Ragnar is dead but his many sons have taken center stage as protagonists and antagonists of the season. Airing every Wednesday since the show resumed the second half of season 5 on November 28, the show continues to be a fan favorite despite Ragnar's departure.

However, the news of 'Vikings' coming to an end hasn't been met with a lot of disappointment. Why? Fans who love the show opine the show could have wrapped up after season 4, following Ragnar's death and that the show was unnecessarily dragged to its current scenario, where Ivar the Boneless has emerged to power in Kattegat and is planning on invading Wessex.

Meanwhile, Floki's storyline has just dwindled as his Icelandic adventure has bored fans. A YouTube user commented on the upcoming promo trailer that the "Iceland part is damn boring," and almost a thousand users liked the comment in approval.

The news of the middle-aged period drama wrapping up after the sixth episode has also led critics to believe it is a good call before it turns into a "nihilistic humdrum." With all the arguments given as to why it's a wise decision to end the genre-bending drama, there's more of a unanimous agreement than disappointment.

Why? Because there are still a lot more episodes left and the ending of the show is not the ending of 'Vikings.' When Deadline reported the Emmy-Award winning drama will wrap up after season 6, it also mentioned 'Vikings' creator Michael Hirst and studio MGM Television are "looking to extend the 'Vikings' franchise with a new series."

The reason for its closure was not given but the final installment of the series will premiere at the end of this year and will move into 2020, just like with the ongoing season 5, which will have its finale on January 30. It has also been reported that season 6 will be a 20-episode installment, so it's a long, long way to go. Therefore, the news isn't as shocking as you might have expected it to be.

Also, the good news of spin-off in the works provides even more possibilities of exploring something fresh off the 'Vikings' storyline but in the Viking period, with links to the original. Hirst, who has written every episode of Vikings, will be working on the spinoff with the same creative minds responsible for 'Vikings' but may include writer Jeb Elliot of 'Die Hard' and 'Vital Signs'. Though there aren't many reports on the new upcoming spinoff, there is ample excitement among the 'Vikings' fandom, who believe their favorite show is coming to an end for good reason.

'Vikings' remain History’s number one scripted series of all time and its breakout ratings hit when it debuted in 2013 and the protagonist Ragnar's death did not hamper viewership at all. In fact, its most recent episode, titled 'The Buddha,' finished Number 2 in the 18-49 age-group and Number 3 in total viewers among all cable originals last week with 2.7 million total viewers, 895,000 of them in the 18-49 category.
