Plot
The streaming giant's latest investigative offering, 'Under Suspicion: Uncovering the Wesphael Case', documents the sensational trial of former Belgian politician Bernard Wesphael, who was accused of murdering his wife Veronique Pirotton in 2013. Wesphael was remanded in custody until his trial, which began in 2015, but was acquitted the following year. 'Under Suspicion' delves into the questions surrounding the mysterious circumstances of Pirotton's tragic demise, many of which weren't answered during the trial. Furthermore, the docuseries also gives Wesphael a chance to tell the world his side of the story by providing never-before-seen interview footage.
Director
Georges Huercano, Pascal Vrebos and Alain Brunard are the producers of 'Under Suspicion: Uncovering the Wesphael Case'. Brunard has also served as the lead director in this project.
News
Bernard Wesphael's roller-coaster journey continued after he was found "not guilty" of the heinous crime. In fact, he released a book -- titled 'Assassin' -- the same year he was acquitted, providing readers his version of events in the aftermath of discovering his wife had passed.
A year later, Wesphael announced his intentions of kicking off a new political movement in Belgium. He was a member of the Ecolo party prior to his arrest. Later on, however, he attempted to launch a new political party that would've been called the Movement for Democracy and Citizenship, or MDC, La Libre reported. Wesphael said he intended to make it a true grassroots movement with the sole aim of giving the power back to the people. According to Looper, Wesphael expressed an interest in giving his platform a real push even as recently as June 2020, amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Last year was quite eventful for the former leader. A special jury panel awarded him almost $100,000 (€83,150) after he made an appeal to receive compensation for wrongful imprisonment. His original request was turned down by the government as he was a legitimate suspect in his wife's murder case. In a statement following his victory in the new case, Wesphael said that his "incarceration was clearly unfair and unfounded."
Having said that, Wesphael's case is easily one of the most fascinating investigative stories to come out of Belgium in recent years. And it has also inspired possibly the most anticipated true-crime series to come out on Netflix this month.
