Netflix has not only increased the number of international releases on its streaming platform but has also been known to deliver top-notch documentaries in recent times. From serial killers to politics, there is not a genre that the streamers' documentaries have not crossed yet and many look forward to 'Netflix and chill nights', which also involve a lot of learning. In August 2020, there are more interesting documentaries said to grace the platform, and here is all you need to know about the top 10 documentaries to watch on Netflix.

'Connected'

Synopsis: "Science reporter and host Latif Nasser investigate the fascinating and intricate ways that we are connected to each other, the world and the universe at large."
Release date: August 2, 2020.

The trailer begins in Bodele, and we're immediately greeted with amazing views as Nasser introduces himself. The show seems to ask the deafening question of how things all around us come to be in this weird thing known as unison. With the universe being questioned, we can see it gets a bit heavy. It, as it says, speaks on the "connections between you, me and our world," and seemingly seems to be an interesting documentary for those interested in finding answers on the genre of philosophy. From topics such as clouds and poop to nukes and surveillance, we think Nasser takes us on quiet a journey to possibly understanding the connections all around us.

'Immigration Nation'

Synopsis: "With unprecedented access to ICE operations, as well as moving portraits of immigrants this docuseries takes a deep look at US immigration today."
Release date: August 3, 2020

In this day and time, with DACA recipients in the US recently being shocked with a scare of possible deportation and the fact that ICE officials have been under court hearing for unjust treatment of immigrants, this documentary couldn't possibly release at a better time. Needless to say, it is triggering as the footage shows officials taking people from their homes and children crying and these are just some of the horrifying realities when ICE comes knocking on your door in the middle of the night.

How far can they go to enforce federal immigration law? Calling it "precision policing", viewers are taken into the depths of how officials carry out their orders. There are no sides taken in the documentary, rather both sides are equally explored as questions such as why treat immigrants as criminals start to jitter moral grounds. It will, of course, educate the public on these realities, and as the many advocates for immigrants say, unjust treatment toward them is just uncalled for. The "American dream has become a nightmare," you hear one detainee say in the trailer, highlighting the fact that many surf tough waters in the US every day.

'Anelka: L'Incompris / Anelka: Misunderstood'

Synopsis: "Inscrutable, incomparable or both? Fames French footballer Nicolas Anelka's controversial legacy is explored in this in-depth documentary."
Release date: August 5, 2020

The trailer promises a story on the life of French professional football player Nicolas Anelka. With interviews with the man himself, viewers can take a look at the player's life. "I'm a footballer, I wasn't there to have fun," Anelka says proudly in the trailer. An account of all his life events, through "his words", we hear and see his accomplishments over the years. With that in mind, there is no publicity without controversy as the release will also delve into the footballer's legal woes deeming it the "Anelka Affair". From his expulsion to blame, the documentary chronicles the entire controversy making us wonder why Anelka was the perfect target.

'World's Most Wanted'

Synopsis: "Heinous criminals have avoided capture despite massive rewards and global investigations. This docuseries profiles some of the worlds' most wanted."
Release date: August 5, 2020

'(Un)Well'

Synopsis: "This docuseries takes a deep dive into the lucrative wellness industry, which touts health and healing. But do the products live up to the promises?"
Release date: August 12, 2020

'High Score'

While the streamer does have this as a listed release, the official synopsis is yet to be released.
Release date: August 19, 2020

'Rising Phoenix'

Synopsis: "Elite athletes and insiders reflect on the Paralympic Games and examine how they impact a global understanding of disabilities, diversity, and excellence."
Release date: August 26, 2020

The following documentary is seemingly anticipated as some are eagerly waiting for the new trailers. The genres, yet again, are vast and wide, marking one of the reasons why the streamer has done well in the documentary/docuseries part of its releases. There are, of course, many documentaries already streaming on Netflix such as '13th' and 'Amy' and these upcoming releases are just going to add to the already expanding genre.
