What happens in the end?

Maciek discovers someone who has fallen into a crevice. He calls for assistance, and is instructed to wait for support and refrain from acting independently. However, he chooses to assist him on his own because Nina is meeting him and he cannot wait there. He falls as he lowers himself. As Nina arrives at the hospital, she discovers him unconscious. Janek feels deceived when she contacts him and tells him she wants to stay there. Later, he approaches her and offers to take a step back to give her some room. He will, however, always be there if she makes a decision.

When Maciek finally awakens, he tells Nina that he missed her and that he knows the solution. He says he still has feelings for her. As she notices he can no longer feel his hand, she assures him everything will be fine. The movie ends with Nina stepping outside the hospital to think about her life and as she contemplates, the screen fades to black.

What does it mean for Nina?

The conversation Nina has with her husband just before she steps out leads us to believe that she has finally decided to leave her lover (at least for now) and help her sick husband recover. It feels like she is owning up to what her life has come to and for the sake of her children, she decides to take care of her husband, and in turn, her family. The symbolic ending gives a quiet yet tough goodbye to the love that never got a chance.
