Spoilers for 'Tommy' Episode 7 'Vic'

Like every other episode on this crime procedural, the latest one also explored pertinent social issues. But Episode 10 'Vic' was more than dealing with gang violence and racial disturbances in Los Angeles. It followed the death of Vic Mazzy, a popular musician and entrepreneur from South of Los Angeles, and a respected leader of the African American community of the area. The entire community had gotten together to commemorate and celebrate the entrepreneurial and educational achievements of the community under Vic's leadership.

As someone focused on empowering his community ahead, Vic reaches out to Chief Thomas to clean up the neighborhood by arresting all the gangs that have been keeping the people on the edge. Vic had even prepared a list of names for the LAPD, which Tommy promised to look into. And right then, Vic is gunned down by an anonymous shooter.

Now, what struck us here is the uncanny similarity of the episode’s plotline with the incident of Nipsey Hussle. For those unaware, the famous American rapper, activist and entrepreneur’s personality was quite akin to our show’s Vic Mazzy. Hussle was not just a music celebrity but also a community leader who denounced gun violence, gang culture and inspired and empowered his fellow community youth to develop their skills and education.

Even fans of the show felt the same way. "As soon as I seen Crenshaw rapper empowering his people, it reminded me so much of @NipseyHussle #Tommy (sic)," commented a fan.

Looking at the similarities of characters and incidents, another fan says, “'This episode of #Tommy... Yeah not a fan. This s**t look just like a reenactment of #NipseyHussle #RIPNipseyHussle."

It is indeed striking to see the parallels between ‘Tommy’s Mazzy and real-life Hussle. Both were from South Los Angeles neighborhood of Crenshaw, which happens to be underserved. They both had the same vision for their community and took similar initiatives to boost their fellow people’s lives. And if you are not aware, Hussle had reached out to LAPD officials to seek help and prevent more gang violence in South LA. On the other hand, as we see on the show, Vic also reaches out to Chief Abigail Thomas for exactly the same reason.

Coincidence much? Perhaps not. As we all know and like to believe, art imitates life and it would be no surprise if a popular primetime show takes inspiration from a real-life incident that shook many people and changed many lives.

‘Tommy’ airs every Thursday night 10pm/9c, only on CBS.
