LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Whoopi Goldberg returned with another controversial episode of ABC's talk show 'The View'. Whoopi kicked off the episode with Anna Nicole Smith's Netflix documentary. She later got candid on the format of 'American Idol' and even dubbed the show the 'downfall of society'.

Whoopi shared examples of Bravo shows like 'Basketball Wives' and 'The Real Housewives' and noted that these shows give the impression that "you're doing something wrong because you're living your life." 'The View' host further claimed that people watch these shows because it makes them feel better and they like to be judgy.

Why did Whoopi Goldberg call 'American Idol' the 'downfall of society'?

Whoopi made some controversial statements during the latest episode of 'The View'. The talk show host said, "I think we as a society love to watch stuff to judge folks." She further added, "You know I always thought that the beginning of the downfall of society was with, oh, what's the name of that show?" when one of the producers replied, "You mean, American Idol?" Joy Behar was confused and asked, "You think the downfall of society was American Idol?" Whoopi replied to her co-host by saying that it began with it and then explained the reason. She elaborated, "Because once we gave people the ability to judge other people, I think we ran amuck with it." Whoopi further noted that it's gone out of control when they invited the public to decide. She added, "And I feel once we do that, we began a cycle."

'Wow lol 'ABC's American Idol?'

'The View' fans took to social media to call out Whoopi for her controversial statement. A viewer tweeted, "Hey Whoopi, on the subject of people voting in American Idol, didn't a group of people judge and vote you in for an Oscar? Hmmm." Another Twitter user wrote, "Would've thought the downfall was the Jerry Springer show, but American idol, that's another way to go." "Did @whoopi say that "American Idol" is the downfall of American civility?? Whaaaat!?," another person added. A user questioned, "Wow lol "ABC's "American Idol'?" while another penned, "So #AuntyWhoopi thinks asking the public to participate in picking things (music, film) is the death of our society??? Wow.. We really need to find some time to have a private chat with Aunty.. cause that sounds insane. It’s called American Idol..."
