'The Pitt' star teases major spin-off amid medical drama's successful run: "There's been a lot of talk..."
'The Pitt' star Shawn Hatosy had a major tease about a potential spinoff with his character in the lead. The 50-year-old who plays Dr. Jack Abbott in the HBO Max medical drama shed light on what a possible spin-off could look like and if he would star in it. At the time of writing, he is a recurring cast member as Abbott, a night shift attending physician at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.
"There's been a lot of talk about the night shift. That would be really cool. We could do some cool, interesting things with the tone of the show," he told People. "Dr. Abbot chose the night shift because it's a certain kind of group of misfits that work together at night," he added. Hatosy said the focus on the night shift would help the show put the spotlight on other cases and characters. That said, he also noted that the show's present and impressive run shows how "everything is great". On the show front, the night shift staffers will have more of the spotlight witb Ayesha Harris, who plays night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis, has promoted to series regular for the third season. 'The Pitt' follows the day team, led by Noah Wyles who plays Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch. The night team in has made periodic appearandes at the start and end of the show's two seasons.
As for Hatosy, the veteran actor has starred in 'Chicago P.D.' and 'Animal Kingdom'. Previously, THR reported that Abbot was likely to be made a full-time star in Season 2. "Then they came back to me to suggest that he’s in the E.R. in the middle of the season and I was like, what does that mean? Why am I coming in the middle? Am I dying? Am I coming in on a gurney?" the actor told the outlet. "I was like, I don’t know if I can do Abbot and be a director at the same time. And then I went home that night and thought, 'Did I just talk myself out of a job?' So I made sure to call him and say, 'I didn’t mean that I don’t want to direct period.' And then I think in season 2 somebody ended up not being able to do it, and I was able to step in,” he further detailed. While the world waits for more on a potential spinoff, new episodes of 'The Pitt' drop Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
