'The Legend of Korra': 5 things fans wish they could have seen in the hit animated series
With 'The Legend of Korra' now joining 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' on Netflix, fans are all set to do a rewatch of the hit animated series. Debates, of course, are raging on about which series was better, but a section of the fandom can't help but wonder about the things that they missed out on on the show's four-season run. We take a look at the top 5 things that fans wish they could have seen in the original series.
5. More Aang
Aang (DB Sweeney on 'The Legend of Korra), the previous Avatar, is dead and that is a necessary part of the new series. To bring him back to life would invalidate Korra's (Janet Varney) entire story. However, Aang remained a fan-favorite, and 'The Legend of Korra' focused very little on what happened to him after the events of 'The Last Airbender.' The Avatar before Aang, Roku (James Garrett), got a lot more backstory about his final days, to say nothing of how he became the Avatar in the first place. While we know a lot about Aang the child, we know very little about his adult life. While Korra did meet Aang, communing with her spiritual connection to her previous incarnation, it was not nearly as often as Aang communed with Roku. And when Korra cut off the connection with her previous lives, that possibility ended for good.
4. The Avatar's journey
When we first meet Korra, she is already adept in Water, Fire and Earth bending. It's only Air bending that she finds particularly elusive. It's a shame to have missed out on this part of the Avatar's journey, as each Avatar's relationship to the elements they master reveals something about their personality. What elements Korra struggled to learn, and which came more easily to her, is an important part of an Avatar's story, one that the series glossed over in its rush to establish Korra as the Avatar.
3. A Team Avatar reunion
'The Legend of Korra' was slow to reveal characters from 'The Last Airbender.' Though we eventually see the adult versions of Katara (Eva Marie Saint), Toph (Kate Higgins), Zuko (Bruce Davison), we only see Sokka in a brief flashback. And Team Avatar never once has the reunion they deserve. Though Korra has her own Team Avatar, it would have been a real treat to see two generations of Team Avatars share the screen in a reunion that the fans have been waiting for since 'The Last Airbender' ended.
2. Pro-Bending: World Championships
When Korra wasn't saving the world, fighting for justice, or harmonizing the Spirit World with the material one, she let off steam (sometimes literally) in the pro-bending tournaments of Republic City. Republic City, however, only had leagues who were from the City itself. It would have been something special to see a world tournament of pro-bending champions from around the world, giving the Fire Ferrets the challenge of their lives without the safety of the world hanging in the balance.
1. Korrasami
It wasn't until after the series ended that it was officially confirmed that Korra and Asami Sato (Seychelle Gabriel) were in fact, a couple. While this relationship is explored further in the comics, it's not one that ever got an explicit mention on the show itself. Korra and Asami's relationship did develop over time, but all of it was unfortunately relegated to subtext. The pairing between the two is one that quickly became extremely important to the fandom, and 'The Legend of Korra' would have been a lot stronger if the two could have entered into an on-screen relationship much, much earlier in the series.
All episodes of 'The Legend of Korra' will be available to stream on Netflix on August 14, 2020.
