‘The Diplomat’ Episode 5 takeaway: Amidst all the geopolitics, Hal Wyler goes skinny dipping
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: If you’re a fan of politics and unlikely marriages, then ‘The Diplomat’ has most likely been on your radar since it was first announced. Even if this genre isn’t your cup of tea, there are certain elements that make ‘The Diplomat’ worth a watch. As the series approaches the halfway mark, things have started to get a lot more intense, in every way possible.
Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell continue their brilliant performances in ‘The Diplomat’ episode 5. However, the cracks in their marriage continue to be more visible, despite both of them trying their best, in their own ways, of course. ‘The Diplomat’ charms the fans yet again, and Hal Wyler has a lot to think about.

Hal tries his best to be the 'arm candy'
‘The Diplomat’ episode 5, titled, ‘The Dogcatcher’ had some high points, in terms of geopolitics and of course, a few lows, in terms of Kate and Hal’s marriage. This episode focuses heavily on Hal trying to prove himself as the ‘arm candy.’ While his wife works with the men, trying to solve problems of the world, Hal spends time with Cecilia Dennison, who was originally assumed to be Austin’s wife, but is his sister.
Hal and Cecilia are in a world of their own in ‘The Diplomat’ Episode 5, and frankly, we can’t seem to turn our heads away from this subplot. Albeit, Hal’s mind does wander off to what Kate is doing, he is trying to live in the moment and have fun with Cecilia. It is only in a series like ‘The Diplomat’ where you could have a boardroom filled with important men, and one important woman, and not too far away have Hal Wyler smoking, drinking, and skinny dipping.
Does Hal cheat on Kate?
As Hal and Cecilia have a picnic of sorts, they talk about their previous loves and lives, before Hal decides to strip naked and make his way into the lake. Carpe diem, right? Cecilia is barely hesitant as she joins him in the lake, and the two of them share a moment. There’s some kissing, and there are things happening under the water, but Hal mentions, “I’m tragically devoted to my wife.” That sums up the Wyler couple, doesn’t it?
Turns out, Hal’s devotion to Kate is a little too extreme because he cannot be aroused by anyone but his wife. Hal and Kate have a very brief conversation about it, but just like many of their problems, it is brushed under the carpet. This series might be centered around politics, but it is moments like these that showcase that ‘The Diplomat’ has the ability to broaden its horizons!
