'The Birch', a Webby Award-winning short film is all set to wade into Facebook Watch. Crypt TV will be producing a 15-episode series for the Video-On-Demand service. The series revolves around a relationship between a teenager and a monster protector in the woods who summons her whenever there is trouble. According to a report by Deadline, the episodes will be narrated from multiple characters perspectives as their lives are shaped by the titular character.

Release date

The series will premiere on Facebook Watch on October 11.

Plot

IMDb's synopsis for the series reads: "A teenager seeks out the help of a monster who lives in the woods. Based on the short film 'The Birch', the character is a monster who is a tall humanoid with a body made of birch wood, hence the name. She has no legs but has long fingers made of branches, and a "crown" of roots on her head. The movie is originally about a sentient tree who protects a kid from bullies. The movie recently passed the 10 million view mark on Crypt TV's Facebook page.

Cast

Dempsey Bryk ('The Silence'), Xaria Dotson ('American Vandal'), Tommy Hestmark ('Vicious'), Midori Francis ('Gotham') and Wayne Pére ('Free State of Jones') form the cast of the series.

Writer/Director

John Ross and Amy Wang come in as series directors. 'The Birch' is produced by Jack Davis, Kate Krantz, and Darren Brandl from Crypt TV.

The trailer shows a boy tormented at school and he summons an ancient being in the woods with a spellbound book passed down through the family. The tree acts as a guardian angel that protects him from the bully. There is enough blood and gore to show that the series will lean heavily towards horror. 

News

The short film version of The Birch was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival and was received well. It also won a Webby for Best Drama: Individual Short or Episode in 2017.
