Tems labeled ‘rude and selfish’ for blocking view of guests with HUGE headgear at Oscars 2023
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Oscar nominee singer-songwriter Tems has ‘stolen’ the show, in a literal sense, from the guests sitting behind her at the Dolby Theater during the Oscars 2023. The singer, who has been a nominee for ‘Best Original Song’ for ‘Lift Me Up’ from ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, has been slammed by the netizens for her elaborate headpiece which seemed to have blocked the view of the guests sitting behind her.
The Nigerian songstress, who has been nominated for the song along with Rihanna, arrived at the coveted venue wearing a white gown from Los Angeles-based fashion designer Lessja Verlingieri’s LEVER COUTURE. The dress is from the designer brand’s LELEKA collection. The exquisite white gauzy gown, however, became a topic of discussion for its elaborate headpiece and got compared to a “stratus cloud”.

‘Best Original Song’
This year’s Oscars saw an interesting combination of nominations for the best original track with 'Applause' from 'Tell It like a Woman' (Diane Warren), 'Hold My Hand' from 'Top Gun Maverick' (Lady Gaga and BloodPop), 'This Is a Life' from 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' (Ryan Lott, David Byrne and Mitski) making it to the list. However, the South Asian song ‘Naatu Naatu’ from the film ‘RRR’ finally lifted the prestigious award in this segment. Composed by MM Keeravani, the song features lyrics by Chandrabose and Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava in vocals.
'Poorly thought out and honestly quite rude'
Tems's dress, and predominantly her headpiece, became the talk of the tinsel town following her appearance in the award show. One user wrote, "Beautiful but really messed up for whoever is sitting behind her. I would be pissed." One social media user even didn't shy away from calling her the "most selfish person", "Wow. Gets the Oscar for most selfish person at an award show". Another user compared her dress to "old rags", "Hideous! Looks like she's wearing old rags. And anyone sitting behind her had to watch the show through her wrap or whatever you call that".

One user even voiced for the others sitting behind her, "I’d be sooo pissed if this giant piece of white tule head thing was blocking my view the entire Oscars. How selfish and self centered to not give a crap no one behind you will be able to see the show!!!!". "Imagine waiting your whole life to be at the Oscars and you end up sitting behind a stratus cloud," another user compared her veil to a condensed water cloud. "This might be a stage or a red carpet dress, but sitting in the audience is a way of saying I don't care about anyone behind me. So rude and selfish!" wrote another detractor.
