'Supergirl' Season 5 Episode 14 Review: Kara's list of villains has more names but we could do with fewer plotlines

'The Bodyguard' could have pushed many of the plotlines to a different episode

Spoiler alert for 'Supergirl' Season 5 Episode 14 'The Bodyguard'

To be honest, the episode is a rather mixed bag. There are multiple storylines and in the end, the only probable takeaway from this is that Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) is more human and that makes her a much loved and well-respected superhero. Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) will most definitely not side with Supergirl anytime soon and that means fans' hopes of a Kara-Lena reunion and compromise are quashed. Definitely, it could do with fewer plotlines.

The spotlight revolves around Andrea Rojas/ Acrata (Julie Gonzalo) as she plans to go live with her Obsidian tech launch only to be attacked by a revenge-sworn extremist. While Kara pretty much doubles up as the bodyguard in addition to saving the world from dire threats, she's not the center of attention in the episode as 'The Bodyguard' decides to distribute it to the Luthors, Leviathan, Brainy (Jesse Rath), Alex (Chyler Leigh) and J'Onn (David Harewood).

Added to this are the first human trials for Project Non-Nocere. The formula is tested on a prison inmate who suffers a seizure pegging Lena's plan. However, she seems to have fixed it when Lex (Jon Cryer) gives her a piece of advice and she uses that as an update. The message writers give fans now is clear: Lena can now be officially added to the list of The Girl of Steel's villains. It does seem that this is the final route the writers had planned for Lena by giving her character a friend-turned-for type of a twist.

Meanwhile, for Andrea, the full extent of her Shadow abilities come into the fore when she finds herself in a helpless situation with the extremist attacking CatCo. Locked up in a DEO holding cell, Andrea summons her powers (The last we saw this was pre 'Crisis').  So there is still a question whether she decides to become her own vigilante or side with the heroes. Cara Buono appears as Gamemnea and appears to be getting closer to Lex further establishing him as one of the main villains in Season 5 as well.

Coming back to Kara, the whole relationship nightmare that fans hoped wouldn't happen might may just materialize with Kara finally agreeing to go on a dinner date with the journalist. While this would be added in the series just to lend a more human side to Kara, it just might incur the wrath of the fans.

'The Bodyguard' is an attempt to bring most of the pre 'Crisis' cast back in concrete roles and it succeeds in bits and pieces. The Leviathan that was once shown more as an enigma may just pop up again and have ties with Lex making them a rather formidable foe to face-off against. The misses came in the form of Brainy's character and a bad meta. The latter was more of a threat only since she was emotionally disturbed.

Like we said, 'The Bodyguard' could have done with fewer plotlines and maybe pushed them to a different episode, however, what it does establish are the new villains Supergirl will have to deal with.

'Supergirl' Season 5 airs 8 pm on The CW with daylight savings in effect. 'Batwoman' moves up its airtime slot at 7 pm.
