'Spaceship Earth': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about Neon's highly-anticipated documentary
Neon's 'Spaceship Earth,' a highly-anticipated documentary, first premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival. As of early May, the documentary is to release on digital platforms, including Hulu, Neon's streaming partner. Neon — responsible for 'Best Picture' winner 'Parasite', and the acclaimed 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' — acquired the documentary in February.
Along with digital platforms, it will also be released on "drive-ins, pop-up screenings, and on the websites of select small business partners" to still keep the social distancing premise in place.
Release date
The documentary will be released on May 8, 2020.
Plot
The plot of this movie might be uncomfortable or relative to what we as humans are currently going through during this quarantine. It follows a group of eight people who built a huge structure called Biosphere 2 in 1991 that replicated the earth's ecosystem. Although they were criticized for being a cult, the "biospherians" lived in it for two years.
“I can’t tell you what that’s going to look like, but we want to make this accessible to people by placing the film in the real world during a time when it can’t play in most theaters. We feel like this is a way to salute our exhibition partners. This film was always intended to be released in theaters," said Neon founder and CEO Tom Quinn.
Cast
All of the following actors will be playing themselves: John Allen, Tony Burgess, Jane Goodall (archive footage), Kathelin Gray, Linda Leigh, Mark Nelson, and Roy Walford.
Creators
The documentary is directed by Matt Wolf. Executive producers include Matt Wolf, Stanley F Buchthal, Dan Cogan, Steve Cohen, Geralyn White Dreyfous, Paul Froehle, Pierre Hauser, Sarah Johnson, Jon Kamen, Nion McEvoy, Jenny Raskin, Dave Sirulnick, Lessing Stern and Andrea van Beuren. The film is an Impact Partners, RadicalMedia and Stacey Reiss production.
