Sistar reunite for final ‘Yoo Heeyeol Sketchbook' episode, fans say 'summer is saved'

If K-pop fans thought 2021 was the year for reunions, 2022 is doubling up on them. From BIGBANG and 2NE1 to Girls’ Generation and now Sistar, older-gen fans are in for a ride. On July 19, it was announced that for the 600th episode of the music program ‘Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook', ‘Summer Queens’ Sistar would be having a reunion stage for the first time since their disbandment in 2017. The news does happen to be bittersweet as the show is allegedly ending due to plagiarism claims that marred Yoo Hee-yeol’s pristine reputation despite the original Japanese singer brushing aside the rumors.

But as consolation, ‘Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook' is going out with a bang as it also happens to end on its 600th episode. So for it, the organizers are bringing in a star-studded guest list of performers from Heize and Melomance to Paul Kim. We are also getting 10cm, Daybreak, Kim Jongkook, Gummy and all four members of Sistar. The girl group has been pretty supportive of each other despite going their separate ways as evident from them meeting up during Soyou’s 2020 release ‘Gotta Go’. They are also currently hyping up Hyolyn’s latest album ‘Ice’ while Hyolyn and Dasom reunited in 2021 for a charity single.

Sistar reunite on 'Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook'

The final episode of ‘Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook' was recorded on July 19 and fans present in the audience circulated pictures of Sistar's reunion as they performed a medley of their hit songs. The show is coming to an end after 13 years and 3 months with the 600th episode airing on July 22 on KBS2 channel. Following the initial plagiarism claims where Yoo Hee-yeol acknowledged similarities between his song and a Japanese song by Ryuichi Sakamoto, two more allegations cropped up. In response, his label shared his apology and his intention to step back from the show.

Fans felt that Sistar was always treated with respect on the show and so it was fitting that they would reunite for its final episode. The girl group debuted in 2010 and had gone on to release viral singles every summer like ‘Touch My Body’ and ‘Shake It’. They are one of the few K-pop groups that graciously disbanded as both fans and the group got closure with a final album and proper farewell promotions. The members stayed on good terms and have had no qualms in reminiscing about their times as a group which had fans always hopeful that they would one day reunite.

Fans trended Sistar as they made tweets like, “I've been waiting and praying for a Sistar reunion since June 4th, 2017. Yall can't even imagine the joy I'm feeling.” A Wonder Girls fan joked, “2ne1, snsd, and sistar reunions this year…meanwhile:.” Another shared, “SISTAR IS REUNITING THE SUMMER IS SAVED!” One fan commented, “Sistar really returned to save the summer.” Another added, “Sistar performing as ot4 on the same stage again for this Friday, the first stage ever since disbandment in 2017. The truly summer queen, your highness, getting the throne back.”

One fan made a reaction meme, “SISTAR when they saw how no damn group was saving summer for the last 5 years.” Another said, “YHY always treated hyolyn and sistar with care and love,  I don't think there's a better show for a sistar reunion.” One joked, “When starship copyrights the SISTAR name so for their reunion comeback they rebrand to MOTHAR.” Another said, “Can’t believe we have to sacrifice yhy’s sketchbook for a SISTAR reunion.”
