‘Sex Education’ Season 2 Episode 3 sees Aimee bake cake for Maeve's birthday before getting sexually assaulted
The third episode of 'Sex Education' Season 2 sees Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey) start her day with a message from the local pretzel shop that wishes her a happy birthday and offers her a free pretzel. She is annoyed because it is not someone she knows and not having someone in life who would remember her birthday has made her hate the day.
She has a snarky, cynical retort about why she doesn't like her birthday when Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield) finds out, but the truth is clear when she sees Aimee Gibbs (Aimee Lou Wood) in the hallway with a birthday cake. The cake, however, is smushed because a random guy in the bus masturbated and ejaculated on Aimee's jeans.
She tries to brush it off as another weird day but was clearly disturbed enough by what happened on the bus to destroy a part of the cake she had baked for Maeve. So when Aimee asks Maeve what she wants to do for her birthday, Maeve tells her she wants to go to the police station.
Aimee is unsure if this is a good idea and that is because she doesn't see what happened to her as sexual assault. She even compares the incident to a man sneezing involuntarily and tries to make light of it.
Only when she is asked questions by the police does she understand how the situation could play out and initially she wants to walk out with her beloved pair of jeans. Maeve, without pushing Aimee too much, tries to convince Aimee that reporting him is the right thing to do because he could do this to someone else on another day.
So, Aimee reports the man and when all is done, she comprehends it all and lets the unsettling feeling finally touch her. In the privacy of her bedroom, Aimee feels for the way she was treated by the man, and she is unable to confess this to even her mother.
Instead, she locks it up within her and doesn't get on the bus again the next day for school because she sees the man who masturbated sitting on the bus. Maeve, on the other hand, realizes that this birthday has turned out to be a lot better than the others that she had lived through so far.
She marvels at the cake Aimee baked for her because that is definitely not something that Maeve was used to. She is also not used to receiving birthday gifts and that is exactly why she is overcome with emotions when Otis gives her a five-year diary.
He understands her enough to tear out her birthday pages and Maeve is moved by his thoughtfulness. She almost confessed that she liked him but in the end, she decides not to speak out her thoughts.
For Otis, Maeve's unkind response to his gift is something he has come to expect of her now. So he doesn't pay too much mind. His mind is currently crowded with the thought of his mother dating his girlfriend Ola's (Patricia Allison) father, Jakob (Mikael Persbrandt).
Otis feels suffocated with Jakob being present in his house all the time. He has always been used to men being home during breakfast, but his mother had never shown interest in a relationship before.
However, her interest in Jakob is serious enough for the two of them to tell their kids that they are dating. After a very tedious dinner together, Otis bursts out in anger and tells Jakob he already has a father and doesn't need a new one.
He explains to his mother that they are not a happy family and in fact, throws a tantrum that is quite immature and unlike Otis. He even tells his mother she has mistaken dependency for love and when Dr. Jean tries to send him back to his room, he stands there and tells her that he is 16 years old.
He is forced to apologize to Jakob the next morning, but none of this resolves his antagonism of Jakob. Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa), Otis' best friend gets asked out by exchange student Rahim and his date goes perfectly well. He is even kissed and Eric is quite excited about dating someone out in the open, but that doesn't last too long because he sees Adam is back in town.
He is back and is working part-time at a convenience store which also happens to be Rahim's house. This is a love triangle that we cannot wait to see unravel.
'Sex Education' Season 2 can be streamed on Netflix from January 17.
