With K-pop Twitter still being divided over Seungri’s Burning Sun scandal, the latest update once again has created an uproar. On June 9, Seungri has been transferred from the military prison to a civilian prison and will stay there till the completion of his time. He will be released in February 2023. The former K-pop idol and BIGBANG member was initially sentenced to three years in prison as the prosecution shared he was shifting the blame instead of taking responsibility.

While Seungri had at first claimed he was innocent, he has now changed his stance as he was ready to admit guilt and accept all charges in his first appeal hearing that took place in January. Since he had enlisted in the military after the Burning Sun scandal broke out, he was being tried by the military court. In the first appeal, Seungri apologized, with the prosecution sharing that they were ready to reduce his three-year jail sentence if he admitted to all of the charges.

Seungri to reside in civilian prison till February

Much to fans’ dismay, Seungri has admitted guilt and accepted all charges which include gambling, fraud, enabling prostitution and more at his club, Burning Sun. This has led to the Supreme Court reducing his jail time to a total of one year and six months. Non-fans were infuriated by his audacity as Seungri once again submitted a second appeal in May to reduce his jail time even further. However, his second appeal was rejected and it was announced that he would be moved to a civilian prison for the remainder of his time which is eight months.

‘Of course he will’

The ex-BIGBANG star has been now transferred to Yeoju Prison in Incheon where he will do his time till February 2023. While his fans are happy for him, those who view him as guilty of his crimes are furious. One user brought up the mandatory military service in South Korea, “Law abiding citizens suffered more in the 2 years mandatory military than this 8 months prison time.” Another found it funny, “I am cackling cuz he was famous and now he's not and now he's in jail .” One user posted, “Of course he will. Privileged mfer. Celebrities are never punished for their crimes.”

Knetizens also made posts like, “What is wrong with our country? A man like him should be kept in prison at least until the year 2323,” “ They should've confiscated his assets. All he has to do is serve for a year and he gets to return to his rich lifestyle, there's no downfall here,” and “I want to live like that. Commit all the trashy crimes in life but still have wealth built up and get to take a break for 18 months. What a beautiful country, this hellhole.”
