'Selena: The Series': Release date, plot, cast, and everything you need to know about Netflix's limited series starring Christian Serratos

The Netflix series will be produced by the family members Selena is survived by, and Moisés Zamora will be onboard as executive producer

After Jennifer Lopez's stellar portrayal of the Queen of Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla-Perez, Netflix has found their own version of the musician in 'The Walking Dead' actress, Christian Serratos. The streaming network's two-part series about the Latin singer is expected to begin shooting in Mexico next month and was originally announced last December. So here's all you need to know about the show, titled 'Selena: The Series.'

Release date

Catch 'Selena: The Series' on December 4, 2020, on Netflix.

Plot

According to the official synopsis released by Netflix, the series is "a coming-of-age story following Selena as her dreams come true and all the heart-wrenching and life-changing choices she and her family have to make as they navigate success, family, and music." The singer, songwriter, spokesperson, model, actress, and fashion designer emerged as one of the most influential contributors in music and fashion, labeled as the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainer of the late 20th century. On March 31, 1995, she was shot at the age of 23 and killed by Yolanda Saldívar, her friend and former manager of her Selena Etc. boutiques, who is serving a life sentence now.

Creator

The Netflix series will be produced by Selena's family and Moisés Zamora will be on board as executive producer. Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., her sister Suzette Quintanilla, and family attorney Simran A. Singh serve as executive producers, shares Vulture.

Cast

Insiders have reported that Serrato will play the role of Selena in the upcoming television biopic. Netflix has declined to comment, but from what we know, Serrato's run in the industry has been quite remarkable too. The 28-year-old Mexican-Italian actress had a brief stint in the 'Twilight' movie franchise, as the character Angela. She played Raven on 'The Secret Life of the American Teenager', Suzie Crabgrass on 'Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide', and has had several guest features on shows like 'American Horror Story', 'Hannah Montana', '7th Heaven', and 'Zoey 101'.

Madison Taylor Baez is set to star as the young version of the singer, with Ricardo Chavira as Selena's father and manager Abraham Quintanilla, Seidy Lopez as her mother Marcella, Gabriel Chavarria as her brother and producer AB Quintanilla III, Noemi Gonzalez as her sister Suzette, and Jesse Posey as her husband Chris Perez.

The rest of the cast hasn't been announced yet.

Trailer

The official trailer for the Netflix series is finally here and it sums up beautifully what fans of the late star have in store. Serratos as Selena is a charm unmissable, but so are the cast accompanying her on this voyage to pay a touching tribute. Check it out right here.
