OOPS: Selena Gomez’s kidney donor pal Francia Raisa reacts to singer calling Taylor Swift her 'only friend'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Selena Gomez gushed about Taylor Swift being her "only friend in the industry" in a recent interview. However, the comment did not sit well with Francia Raisa, who donated her kidney to the singer in 2017.
Gomez, 30, told Rolling Stone how Swift, 32, was her only friend in the music industry. “My only friend in the industry really is Taylor [Swift], so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong," she told the magazine. The quote was shared by the E! News Instagram handle, on which actress Raisa, 34, commented saying, "Interesting." It later emerged that Francia was no longer following Gomez on Instagram.

Swifties were quick to defend her following Raisa's alleged comment, pointing out that the singer was clearly talking about her friends in the "music industry." One fumed, "Because you aren't industry friends? Selena literally calls you her sister. If you check the actual interview Selena is clearly implying her social circle of pop girls. Why does Selena constantly need to keep reminding you of the place you hold in her life publicly?" Another wrote, "She clearly said 'music' industry what does she want from her!!" Someone else added, "What Francia did was very kind but doing this and unfollowing her is a bit weird to me."

Gomez and Raisa grabbed headlines in 2017 after the latter donated her kidney to the singer. The pair have been friends since 2007 and first opened up about the procedure during an interview with Today that year. Gomez revealed how she suffered from Lupus, a chronic autoimmune condition, and desperately needed a kidney to save her life.
"One day [Selena] came home and she was emotional. I hadn’t asked anything. I knew she hadn’t been feeling well,” Raisa recalled, “She couldn’t open a water bottle one day. She chucked it and she started crying." The actress continued, "I said, ‘What’s wrong?’ and that’s when she told me. And she goes, ‘I don’t know what to do. The list is seven to ten years long.’ It just vomited out of me: I was like, ‘Of course, I’ll get tested.’”
Two years later, however, reports suggested that Gomez and Raisa were no longer friends. Radar Online reported in 2019 that the pair had stopped talking in October 2018 after she was allegedly hurt by the lifestyle choices the 'Bad Liar' singer was making. One insider told the outlet that Gomez had been drinking alcohol and partying following the life-saving transplant -- something that Raisa didn't appreciate. "Yes, she has a drink from time to time. It is not every day, and she is not using drugs. She is enjoying her life and living it how she wants to live it," the source claimed, adding that the singer was tired of "feeling indebted" to her pal.
Rumors only increased after Gomez failed to refer to Raisa as her friend in a 2019 interview with Capital. The singer was explaining her and her pal's matching tattoos of the date of the kidney transplant, when she referred to Raisa as "the girl who gave me a kidney." However, Gomez herself shut down rumors of a fallout after she posted a birthday tribute to Raisa in July 2020. "Happy birthday to an incredible human being that I’ve known since I was 14,” Gomez wrote on her Instagram Stories. “Your grace, strength, and passion for who you love and what you do has always inspired me. I love you always.”
In March 2021, Raisa penned a lengthy Twitter post to mark World Kidney Day as she recounted her experience of donating a kidney to Gomez. "If you've been following me for a while, you know that I've kept my kidney donation process pretty private," she wrote on Twitter, sharing a photo of herself in the hospital. "However, I think I've gotten to a point in my life where I feel comfortable and confident in speaking about my experience and using my platform to raise awareness for the various kidney diseases that affect our population." Gomez later shared the post, gushing, "Thank you for blessing me. I am forever grateful for you."

Gomez and Raisa also reunited in a TikTok video that same month, showing the two of them participating in the "He's a ten, but..." trend. "He’s a ten, but he hates your best friend,” Gomez said in the video. “Mmm, I hate her too, sometimes,” Raisa quipped in response. “Honestly, fair enough," Gomez admitted, laughing.
