Selena Gomez recently opened up about how she felt deeply hurt after people criticized her for her weight gain following her battle with lupus.

During an appearance on Raquelle Stevens' video podcast 'Giving Back Generation,' the 27-year-old singer admitted that the "attacks" on her changing body structure really "messed" her up emotionally, especially when she did not have any control over her weight fluctuations. She revealed that a combination of her condition, medications and other health factors contributed to her sudden weight gain, Daily Mail reported.

"I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues. And that's when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff," she said. "It's the medication I have to take for the rest of my life—it depends on even the month, to be honest."

The 'Lose You To Love Me' singer started receiving flak for something that she was beyond her control and says the negative comments on social media started affecting her.

"So for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for [gaining weight]. And in reality, that's just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends what's happening in my life," she said. "That got to me big time. That really messed me up for a bit."

However, she says she did her best to rise above the negativity. "I don't care to expose myself to everyone and hear what they have to say about it," she told the podcaster.

Recently, Selena had opened up about the fact that she had undergone a kidney transplant in September 2017 due to complications from lupus. Her friend Francia Raisa, who donated her the new kidney, was thanked by Selena in a post.

"There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa," she wrote in a tweet, thanking her friend. "She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis."
