NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Sam Smith was verbally assaulted in New York City after their widely panned "demonic" Grammy performance, with a video showing an infuriated woman screaming that the British singer "belongs in hell." The Irish woman screams at the 30-year-old performer, "Sam Smith belongs in hell!" in a video that was released on social media late on Wednesday, February 15, and has since gone viral.

Sam Smith has been dominating the news with the release of their most recent album, 'Gloria,' and their back-to-back 'Unholy' performances at the Grammy Awards and BRITS. Due to their contentious performance with Kim Petras on both award presentations, Smith has since been dealing with the backlash. Following the "demonic" and "satanic" imagery presented during their performance, many have criticized the star.

Who heckled Sam Smith?

An Irish woman taunted Smith as they were walking at the Central Zoo in New York. "You belong in hell. Sam Smith belongs in hell. That demonic, twisted sick bastard," The performer of 'Stay With Me' ignores her and moves on, appearing to be heading for the entrance to the Central Park Zoo while the woman continues to shout. "You sick f***er, leave the kids alone."

"Sam Smith is a pedophile," the woman continued to yell at Smith, who took out their camera and began filming. "You sick, Sam Smith, motherf——r. You're evil!" Smith, who recently came out as nonbinary and uses they/them as his pronouns, appeared unfazed throughout the entire verbal attack, as reported by New York Times.

The pop sensation sang their chart-topping hit 'Unholy,' along with German singer Kim Petras, at the 65th Grammy Awards on February 5. Their contentious performance sparked controversy, which led to the woman's angry outburst.

Sam Smith's Grammys performance of 'Unholy'

Smith and Petras gave a wild performance of their popular song 'Unholy' at Crypto.com Stadium before receiving the Grammy Award for Best Musical Duo/Group Performance. Smith completed their sinister look with a devil-horned cap, and Petras, 30, wore headgear with devilish flair. Along with large fireballs and Petras' appearance in a cage surrounded by whip-wielding backup dancers, the show created quite a stir.

Both celebrities have drawn attention with their provocative attire and dance while dressed in scorching red clothes. Conservatives, right-wing commentators, and politicians were outraged by Sam Smith's headgear, which had wicked horns. Sen Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) both expressed displeasure with the "evil" and "demonic" performance, per reports from MusicTimes.

Notwithstanding the controversy, Smith and Patras later in the evening won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the song, becoming Petras, 30, the first transgender person to do so. “I want to thank all the incredible transgender legends before me who kicked these doors open,” an emotional Petras said afterward.
