Lip-syncing is a controversial topic in K-pop. We have had the likes of Stray Kids’ Bang Chan sharing that they sometimes need to lip-sync as the exhausting lifestyle of an idol could ruin someone’s vocals if they sang live all the time without rest. However, there are some K-pop groups that lip-sync almost always whether it is of their own volition or their label’s orders, giving ammunition to haters to drag them. With lip-sync being rare in the West, it is also always a hot topic among international fans. And now monster rookie STAYC has revealed their thoughts on lip-syncing.

Many music shows and award shows also prefer if artists lip-sync and intentionally increase the volume of the backtrack as they feel the general public is turned off by the raw vocals and heavy breathing due to exhaustive choreography. But that hasn’t stopped some as there are groups who have confidently revealed that they have never lip-synced as seen in Ateez’s case making fans proud. And now we have STAYC also sharing that even when they were told to lip-sync, they still sang live.

STAYC talk about lip-syncing

In a recent video, STAYC explained why they felt the need to sing live. They said, “We are on stage, so we need to perform live.” They asked, “Is there any reason to perform live? You should do it if you are singers. If I’m not live, I don’t feel like I have any energy. Just not singing and only lip-syncing and dancing…the energy feels different through the camera.” STAYC also sang live while filming for their music videos even though it was not required.

During another appearance, the group also talked about voice cracks which deter a lot of idols from singing live when they are not in their best condition. STAYC was thankful that their producer had assured them, “The PD said that the voice crack is not our fault. It is true that if you are off-tune, it means that you didn’t practice. But voice cracks aren’t due to lack of practice.” Fans were touched that the girls were more confident as STAYC said, “Yes, it just means that we are doing our best in singing so our voice cracked.”

‘Could never be STAYC babes’

Knetizens were impressed as they made comments like, “They're not taking any jab, they're just saying the truth,” and “They just have cool principles, what jab... I feel like most idols only sing with their real voice a few times then throw away their mics. They've debuted for over a year and half but are still maintaining this attitude. They're seriously cool.” One user explained, “Yet people still believe this means the singer isn't talented 💀. Voice cracks are normal, people. Also, lipsync sometimes is necessary. If u have lots of schedules where you have to sing, it can be harmful. I mean, if you talk a lot of scream more than you're used to, it already hurts, so nope, better take care of your own health. Edit: With this I hope no one thinks I'm dragging them or smth because nope. I believe one day they'll lipsync, they're getting more and more attention so it wouldn't be good for them to live sing always, they're too young.”

One fan tweeted, “Stayc too talented to lip sync to the point where they sing live while they shoot their mvs.” Another posted, “Stayc is the standard fr idols are called singers and they're correct. why would someone be called a singer if they continuously lipsync on stage?” One fan added, “Good morning to stayc girls who doesn't have lip sync in their vocabulary.” Another brought back, “Thoughts on the lipsync community? STAYC: we respect them, but our mics are always on.” One fan wrote, “Their faves lip sync and stand on stage like robots dipped in water. could never be stayc babes.” Another shared, “STAYC will always sing live.”
