'Riverdale' Season 4: Varchie storyline feels overshadowed by the flashforward, here's why
This article contains spoilers for 'Riverdale' Season 4 Episode 13: 'The Ides of March'
While the second half of the episode was all about the leadup to the ominous flash-forward, the focus was on Veronica (Camila Mendes) as she was seen trying to come to terms with the fresh setback in her life. Hiram Lodge's (Mark Consuelos) deteriorating health condition shook her world and for the Lodge heiress, it was like being punched in the gut.
As a coping mechanism, she resorts to some steamy lovemaking with Archie (KJ Apa), crazy partying and drowning her sorrows in alcohol. When Archie confronts her about the sudden change in attitude, Veronica breaks down explaining how learning of her father's illness broke her. In what comes as adding a new layer to Archie's persona, he advises her to do something that puts Hiram back on his feet. And she promptly does so by telling her father about her upcoming ad campaign for her 'Red Raven' rum that directly attacks the Lodge Rum.
While that was a good enough plot point, it quickly is forgotten when the storyline switches to the flash-forward that explains Jughead's (Cole Sprouse) apparent death. And while it overshadows the whole Ronnie and her troubles plotline, it was perhaps planned that way to keep the audience reactions at an all-time high as Episode 14: 'Chapter Seventy-One: How to Get Away With Murder' airs on February 26, after a week's break in between.
At the moment, Jug's death raises a lot of questions with Betty (Lili Reinhart). However, coming back to the Varchie storyline, it was some much-needed screentime that both characters needed, especially Ronnie, who has seen more of a supporting role despite being part of the core four.
