Bethenny Frankel understood something was 'wrong'
On Sunday, Bethenny uploaded a video on Instagram where she answered asked the question, "How much was my Season 1 contract." Bethenny captioned her post, "When negotiating a contract, look at the big picture… play the long game-in life and in housewives." The TV personality answered the question, "The contract said $7,250, which I did not dispute." She added, "I was a nobody. That was a lot of money for me. All I had was time in my hands, no kids, no family, no problem." However, not everything went too sweet and simple with Bethenny's contract. The TV personality then revealed what the problem was with the contract. She said, "The only thing I did cross out was the thing that said 'Bravo will take a percentage of anything I made.'" Bethenny claimed that at that time she felt like "nobody" to have cared about these things. However, deep down Bethenny "understood conceptually that was wrong."
'RHONY' alum trashes Bravo for waking up when 'The Bethenny clause' was created
After understanding that giving Bravo a percentage of everything she earned was not right, Bethenny knew that she was about to go places and do something about it. The star said, "I was going places and I was gonna do something that one's gonna own any part of it." Bethenny claims that things turned out for her when Hollywood Reporter's article and Forbes cover came out on her because she sold the Cocktail portion of her business for a lot of money. Ever since then, Bethenny claimed, "Bravo woke up, the entertainment industry woke up, reality television woke up." The reality TV personality added, "They created what now is referred to by the industry as the 'Bethenny Clause'." The Bethenny Clause means "anyone going on reality TV has to give a percentage to the powers that be."
Bethenny told the power dispute story with Bravo to the fans because she believes people are smarter than they think. She explained, "I was a nobody, I was no a business person, I had no institutional knowledge or experience in any of this, I read a contract and something didn't feel right to me and I took it out." Bethenny claims that this step changed her "entire life" and the "entertainment industry and their practices." Bethenny further ended her video by asking fans to "never assume anyone smarter than you."
