'Real Housewives of Orange County' finale: Fans call Gina 'naive' for considering getting back with abusive, cheating ex-husband Matt
Infidelity and physical abuse are two of the many aspects that outline a bad marriage. In reality TV star Gina Kirschenheiter's case, this is true. Her storyline on 'Real Housewives of Orange County' has been all about estranged husband Matt Kirschenheiter, whom she had charged with domestic abuse and even claimed he had an extramarital affair.
Interestingly, in the 'RHOC' finale episode Gina's thoughts about Matt appeared changed completely, which good friend Emily Simpson seemed suspicious of. Gina was surer than ever that Matt was a changed man and that they should build on their relationship. However, Emily, in her confessionals, asked how much can a man like Matt change? But then again it would eventually be Gina's call and whether or not she wants to honestly assess the whole situation.
Gina may be fully convinced that Matt can do no wrong and is back to being the doting husband he once was, but the fans aren't buying it, with most calling it a stupid decision. "I can’t believe Gina is this naive that she is believing everything Matt is saying if that was the case he wouldn’t have cheated I’m getting more he doesn’t wanna pay cs so he’s wooing her #rhoc #rhocfinale," expressed a fan.
Another wrote that Gina's storyline has been dragged out and that she needs to understand that a Leopard doesn't change its spots. "#RHOC The last half of the season, as Gina talks about how committed & changed Matt is, I’ve continuously wondered... At what point did Matt physically assault her? Didn’t he choke her? Must’ve been after they stopped filming?" a viewer questioned.
They all have a valid point because in the last couple of years it was Gina who took it on herself to tackle her broken marriage in the most graceful way possible. After she found out Matt was having an affair, she kept it a secret for a while from the housewives because she didn't want it to impact their kids negatively. “I don’t want my kids to think their father is a bad person, ’cause he’s not. I don’t want to be the reason that anyone would look at him badly. He’s not a bad person, it’s just hard," she told Emily in one of the earlier episodes, through her sobs.
This was preceded by the domestic abuse incident, during which Gina was hit, choked, dragged and thrown around by Matt, following which she called the cops on him and he was immediately arrested. The trial is scheduled for January 2020, but Matt did not plead guilty. Given how Gina has been slowly letting Matt back in her life, there's a good chance the charges might be dropped.
Gina had filed a restraining order against Matt, which requires him to stay 100 feet away from her. How would the couple possibly wade through this? Will they ever get back to being what they were when they started out? We'll have to wait for season 15 for that!
