The 'Record of Youth' Episode 4 promo is out and it begins with Hye-jun (Park Bo-gum) arriving at Lee Min-ja's home office to tell her the happy news. Until episode 3, Min-jae had tried hard to convince Hye-jun that she will be his manager, sincere, and dedicated to finding him work as an actor. In this vein, she acquires a part for Hye-jun in the same movie that he had auditioned for, to play the lead role but had failed. Now, the part that he had got is small, but Hye-jun is excited because his role is great and it is this that convinces him to say yes to Min-jae.

Accept Min-jae as his manager and continue to work with her. It seems as if he has some new found energy that is inside him, pushing him to keep going and maybe, just maybe succeed in making it this time around. This decision doesn't just make him happy, but Min-jae as well and we can see it all in the promo. Then we have Jeong-ah (Park So-dam), who until now hasn't played too big a part in the show. In the promo, however, we see Jeong-ah begin to face trouble at work possibly because of Hae-hyo who wanted to get his make-up done only by Jeong-ah.

He is aware of Jeong-ah being Hye-jun's fan and from the looks of it, he is only trying to help his friend's friend. However, this might have brought on some tough times for Jeong-ah who is still just an assistant. The senior makeup artist at the shop that Jeong-ah works at is extremely jealous of Jeong-ah's talent in make-up as well as people skills. Previously, we had seen how she had insulted Jeong-ah in front of everyone, and now, we might see her take it all a step further and make it difficult for Jeong-ah to continue working at the shop.

In the promo, we hear Jeong-ah tell someone that he shouldn't interfere in all of this as this war is hers to fight because it is about her work. Is she speaking to Hye-jun who had already been cheering her on when it came to taking on her jealous and not very talented senior? Or is it Hae-hyo who had already interfered at her workplace by asking for her to do his make up and thereby getting the shop owner to promote Jeong-ah from an assistant? Either way, it would be refreshing to see this young woman fight her own battles and make decisions regarding her life. As much as we all love K-drama, we know the most common trope in the language is the poor damsel in distress getting rescued by a rich chaebol boyfriend as the two pursue a happy ending. Yes, we're looking at you -- 'Heirs', 'Boys Over Flowers', and 'Playful Kiss'.

The promo also shows Jeong-ah get drunk with Hye-jun and as a result, her guard drops even further and their interaction indicates that Jeong-ah may just have progressed to crushing on Hye-jun from just being a fangirl.

'Record of Youth' originally airs on tvN on Mondays and Tuesdays in South Korea and can be streamed on Netflix in the US.
