'Queen of Rap': Fans hail Nicki Minaj after Billboard names her as 'The Greatest Female Rapper of All Time'

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Billboard has announced 'Top 10 Greatest Rappers of All Time'. Nicki Minaj becomes the only female rap artist to top the list making her 'The Greatest Female Rapper of All Time'. The list has been created as hip-hop celebrates 50 years. Over the month of January, Billboard has been rolling out its list of the 'Top 50 Greatest Rappers of All Time' before revealing the final top 10.

Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj is the only woman who could make it to the top 10.  Lil’ Kim (No. 31), Lauryn Hill (No. 30), and Missy Elliott (No. 19), were the other female rappers who made it to the list of top 50. Billboard stated, "Nicki has defended her title for over a decade, with incredibly animated flows and alter egos – from the soft-spoken, pink-haired Harajuku Barbie to the volatile Roman Zolanski with the British cockney accent."

It further added, "She’s undeniably blazed the trail for the next generation of female MCs, while at the same time, building a legacy whose impact is hardly limited to the hip-hop world: Nicki is one of only a dozen artists to have more than 100 Billboard Hot 100 entries, and earned the MTV Video Vanguard Award in 2022 for her provocative music videos." 

Who are the 'Top 10 Greatest Rappers of All Time'?

Billboard named Jay z as the greatest rapper of all time. Followed by Kendrick Lamar, Nas, Tupac Shakur, Eminem, The Notorious B.I.G, Lil Wayne,  Drake, Snoop Dogg, and Nicki. While naming Jay Z as 'The Greatest Rapper of All Time', the outlet claimed, "The first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Jay-Z believes everyone has genius-level talent. Lucky for us, Jay found his early in life, and has since become your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper.  Maybe there are other rappers who could claim to match Jay at his peak. But there are simply none who can match his entire career — his longevity, the breadth of his accomplishments, and what he’s meant to hip-hop from a musical, cultural and financial standpoint for the last three decades." 

What are the criteria for selection? 

The outlet has restricted its selection to only North America. The other criteria include, "body of work/achievements (charted singles/albums, gold/platinum certifications), cultural impact/influence (how the artist’s work fostered the genre’s evolution), longevity (years at the mic), lyrics (storytelling skills) and flow (vocal prowess)."

The Internet reacted to this announcement, A user said ,"Queen of rap." Another added, "SHE IS A ICON." "Queen competing with men. She is mother," wrote a fan. A user wrote, "Nicki may you reign forever." "The one and only queen of rap," read a tweet. "Thank you @billboard for honoring AUTHENTICITY," said another. A fan further noted, "She’s should be above Drake on that list. Only Kanye have is missing on the list. Drake should be somewhere with them Jcole Travis Scot and Future." Another claimed, "Queen lowkey one o my fav albums of all time. Good Form unlocked a whole ass genre of music for me I’m so serious." "There will never EVER be another Nicki Minaj," said a user.
