LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Sam Smith and Kim Petras took the stage on Sunday, February 5, to perform ‘Unholy,’ just after it won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, making Petras the first trans woman to win the award. The song was taken from ‘Gloria,’ Smith’s fourth studio album, which was released on January 27. While Smith was seen in a floor-length coat with red gloves and a Satanic horn hat, Petras wore a red mini-dress performing with whips, chains, and devil horns.

Many applauded the performance with one saying, "THIS WAS SO F***G POWERFUL. OVER THE MOON FOR YOU." However, there were many who slammed Grammy for their hypocrisy as they banned Nicki Minaj since her 'Roman Holiday' performance at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards on February 12, 2012, but allowed the 'Unholy' performance.

'Blatant hypocrisy, disrespect, & bulls**t'

One wrote, "Curious .. How can Sam smith perform like this but Nicki Minaj was prohibited to perform this?" Another asked, "Didn’t Nicki Minaj get blacklisted for a similar performance Sam Smith just did." Another commented, "So @samsmith can perform unholy and be a devil on stage but @NICKIMINAJ can’t perform Roman Holiday."

A fan wrote, "So sam smith just took us to HELL with the damn devil but when Nicki Minaj wanted to free her soul from sins with the Catholic Church it was a problem. Nicki was ahead of her time … that’s it, that’s all!" An individual tweeted by saying, "Sam Smith can do a performance like that and get praised but my girl @NICKIMINAJ is still suffering from the repercussions of performing Roman Holiday at #GRAMMYs." One pointed out the hypocrisy and wrote, "#NickiMinaj got blacklisted for her Grammy performance that was deemed demonic. But #SamSmith performed a song tilted Unholy, wearing all red, a hat with devil horns, and fire on stage. Got claps, and a Grammy. The blatant hypocrisy, disrespect, & bulls**t."

Nicki Minaj's 'Roman Holiday' Grammy performance

The 40-year-old rapper's arrival wearing a hooded red dress standing alongside a man dressed up as a Pope, and her exorcist-riffing performance at 2012 Grammy Award caused huge controversy. She hasn’t performed at the Grammys since then. In 2019, she accused Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich of deliberately snubbing her, claiming, “I was bullied into staying quiet for seven years out of fear.”
