Spoilers for 'Prodigal Son' episode 5 'The Trip'

In last week's episode 'The Trip', Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne) made a sobering discovery. After accidentally snorting a cocktail of drugs, Malcolm goes in the titular trip and finds himself face to face with a hallucination of himself dressed as his serial killer father Dr Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen). The hallucination helps him understand that the only way he can find any resolution is by finding some context to stitch together "all the crazy" directing him to a certain box that he had hidden under his bed in his childhood home.

When Malcolm retrieves the box, he finds some childhood paraphernalia - some memories he had hidden away. But he also finds some photographs of a camping trip with his father. The photograph shows him and his father posing in front of a station wagon, which looks like the same car that Malcolm is envisioning in his half-asleep-half-awake state. These photographs prompt Malcolm to sift through repressed memories that could possibly hold the answer to the 'girl in the box'.

In the preview for the upcoming episode titled 'All Souls and Sadists', Malcolm is seen sitting in the office of his childhood psychiatrist Dr Gabrielle Le Deux (Charlayne Woodard) holding the same photograph in his hands trying to decipher its background. "They're like slivers of memory," he tells her. "If I can find this car, maybe it'll help me remember."

In the next scene, Dr Whitly says, "We're going to have a guys' weekend," pointing to the fact that Malcolm and The Surgeon were apparently alone when this said incident happened. But that doesn't explain who would click the photograph of them together. According to the official synopsis for 'All Souls and Sadists', "When Bright uncovers a photo of himself and Martin from when he was a kid, he is forced to focus on the repressed memories from his childhood psyche."

But it looks like this mystery will be stretched over the upcoming episodes as the show is following a mystery-of-the-week format with the slow unraveling of the larger plot of Dr Martin and Malcolm. At the same time, the promo also previews Malcolm's sister Ainsley (Halston Sage) who expressed her interest in interviewing The Surgeon, but "Jessica (Bellamy Young) and Malcolm agree on one thing - they must put a stop to Ainsley’s idea to interview The Surgeon" (according to the synopsis). Ainsley had earlier hoped to interview her father The Surgeon because it would do wonders for her career. But, both her mother and her brother know this will only end in distress for her. Is she prepared?

What will Malcolm find in his memories this episode?

'Prodigal Son' airs on Mondays at 9 pm ET/PT.
