'Dark Winds' Season 5 set to see Zahn McClarnon reunite with 'Fire Country' star as lead investigator
'Fire Country' star Paola Núñez is all set to reunite with Zahn McClarnon in 'Dark Winds' Season 5. The duo previously worked together in the AMC series 'The Son'. The latest comes on the back of the network renewing the critically acclaimed series for a fifth instalment, currently in production in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Per reports, Núñez will serve as a lead investigator for the US Attorney's office, with a connection to Leaphorn’s (McClarnon) past. 'Dark Winds' is based on Tony Hillerman's Leaphorn & Chee book series. The story is set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley and follows Lt. Joe Leaphorn and his deputy, Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), as they investigate the crimes in the region.
Núñez is currently working on CBS's hit series, 'Fire Country'. Her major projects include 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die' and 'The Fall of the House of Usher'. Now, she comes in as part of the hit series created by Graham Roland with John Wirth as the showrunner. Additional EPs include late Hollywood legend, Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin, Anne Hillerman, Vince Gerardis, Thomas Brady, Max Hurwitz, Chris Eyre, Tina Elmo, and Jim Chory.
"Over four seasons, Dark Winds has masterfully blended compelling character-driven stories, Navajo culture, spirituality, and breathtaking cinematography. We are elated to continue the journey alongside showrunner John Wirth and the incomparable Zahn McClarnon," Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Networks and president of AMC Studios, said while speaking with THR. "Our extraordinary producing and creative team, cast, and crew have crafted a gripping crime drama that continues to be embraced by fans and widely celebrated by critics. We can’t wait to share more of this incredible story with audiences across the globe."
At the time of writing, 'Dark Winds' Season 4 centers on the search for a missing Navajo girl, which takes Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito (Jessica Matten) from the relative security of the Navajo Nation to the gritty terrain of '70s Los Angeles as they race against time to save her from a killer with connections to organized crime. For now, there is no logline for Season 5. However, it is safe to speculate that the new edition will reunite the trio.
Also expected to return are Deanna Allison as Leaphorn's estranged wife, Emma, A Martinez as Gordo Sena, and Andersen Kee and Wade Adakai as officers Harold Bigman and Gary Felix, respectively. Like its predecessors, 'Dark Winds' is expected to comprise eight episodes.
While there is no official release date, the series is expected to premiere sometime in 2027, preferably in the summer window between June and July, like the previous seasons. Season 4 is currently at its midway stage with four episodes remaining. The series finale is slated for April 5.
