The eldest son of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Prince George, turned nine on Friday, July 22. “George is turning 9!,” the proud parents captioned the photo which was clicked by the Duchess of Cambridge herself. Over the years, the two members of the royal family have made it a tradition to upload a picture of their children on social media to celebrate their birthdays with the public.

Despite the fact that this year was no different, keen-eyed royal fans have noticed a significant distinction between the images of Prince George and those of his younger siblings. The Duchess of Cambridge, a skilled photographer, is renowned for taking her own portraits of her children. However, upon closer examination, it appears Kate wasn't the one behind the lens for her eldest child—until now.

Prince George can be seen grinning on a sandy shoreline in the photo that was made public this year, looking dapper in a light blue shirt. His mother reportedly took the picture for the first time earlier this month while on a family vacation in the UK, and she is said to have been "delighted" to share it with the public.

But in the past, the prince was photographed by a paid professional. "The reason George's birthday photos have all been taken by a professional photographer up until this point [is] because he is the heir to the throne, and some of them were "bonus photos" from previously released sets, according to the royal website Gert's Royals. (For instance, Charlotte and Louis' christenings)," a source in the know of the development tweeted.

However, the Duchess of Cambridge prefers to take her own photos of her kids in order to protect their anonymity and freedom. The Duchess takes official portraits of George, Charlotte, and Louis in order to "use her artistic skills," but also to maintain "freedom and power over what is used in public," according to Zoe Bonser,  director of 'The Baby Show', who spoke to the Express.

Prince George of Cambridge, also known as Prince George Alexander Louis, was born on July 22, 2013. He was born in the exclusive Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital in the heart of London, and the world's media first saw him when Prince William and Kate were holding him on the hospital steps the following day. George is third in the line of succession for the British throne.

In an exciting start to the summer, Prince George attended his first Wimbledon match on Sunday to watch the men's final with his parents. George, who was dressed sharply in a suit and tie and sat front and center in the Royal Box at Centre Court, even got to hold the coveted trophy when the family met champion, Novak Djokovic.

The family will most likely be moving this summer. Kate and Prince William intend to move from Kensington Palace to a new home in Berkshire, the county that houses the Queen's primary residence, Windsor Castle. The family is expected to move into Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate, but this is yet to be confirmed.
