'Preacher' Season 4 Episode 8 'Fear of the Lord' will see Jesse Custer finally meet God

The trailer, sneak peek scene and photographs released by AMC before episode 8 airs show a suicidal Herr Starr, a vengeful Tulip O'Hare and Jesse Custer being set on fire
PUBLISHED SEP 12, 2019

In 'Messiahs'the September 8 episode of 'Preacher', we saw Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) in Hell being offered the top post by fake Fiore (Tom Brooke). But while Jesse might have been tempted last week, the trailer released by AMC for the upcoming episode 8 shows Jesse throwing the offer back in Fiore's face.

After this, he's promptly set on fire and shown free falling into an abyss (can you get thrown deeper into Hell?) but he will probably be alright since sneak-peek photographs from the episode show him reuniting with the Saint (Graham McTavish). There is also that brief second in the trailer, of Jesse falling on his knees in front of God (Mark Harelik), reminiscent of the scene in episode 6,  where in video footage, Abraham falls to his knees in gratitude after God stops him from killing his son.

So in all probability, the upcoming episode is the one where Jesse will finally complete his quest of meeting God. Misfortune continues to dog Herr Starr (Pip Torrens). His mysterious savior from last week is shown saying he tried to save what he could of what is left of Herr Starr.

The next scene shows ever-loyal Featherstone (Julie Ann Emery) valiantly carrying the heavily mutilated Starr who seems to have lost a leg as well, compounding his misery after God's dingo attack on his man parts. It is enough to make a man suicidal, really, and Herr Starr seems to be attempting to do just that in the trailer, muttering "No Messiah, No Apocalypse".

And what of Tulip O'Hare (Ruth Negga), Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) and Humperdoo (Tyson Ritter)? They seem to be getting on like a house on fire in one of the stills from episode 8 released by AMC. A far cry from the enraged Tulip in the trailer with her gun pointed at poor Humperdoo's head challenging God to step forth and witness the execution of the Christ child.

As the sneak peek scene from the episode shows, the trio's dynamic is obviously a shifting one as they spend time together even as Grail operatives close in on them. In this scene, Cassidy warms up to Humperdoo, while Tulip tells the Messiah to come to her so she can check the explosives tied to his waist. That is one way to have a Big Bang.

Meanwhile, Jesus Christ (Tyson Ritter) and Hitler (Noah Taylor) are still at the Masada firming up the nitty-gritty of the anticipated Apocalypse, even though it is slightly off track now with the Messiah in the wind and a pitiable Herr Starr who has lost his will to live. But released photos do show Hitler conferring with a beaten-down Herr Starr, presumably after his little suicide bid has failed.

For this we are glad. What would we do without our archvillain plotting in Masada, after all? And who else could spank some sense into the Fuhrer when he steps out of line? Watch this space for the review of episode 8 'Fear of the Lord' after it airs on Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
