James Gandolfini's son Michael is spitting image of dad as young Tony Soprano as he’s seen for the first time on set of 'Sopranos' prequel

The 'Sopranos' prequel, 'The Many Saints of Newark,' is set during the race-riots in 1967 when there were high racial tensions in Newark, New Jersey, mainly between Italian-Americans and African-Americans

It is a known fact that late James Gandolfini's son is playing his father's role as young Tony Soprano in the forthcoming 'Sopranos' prequel movie titled 'The Many Saints of Newark.'

Now we get to see a glimpse of Michael Gandolfini in the film after some on-set shots of him in character were released. The images were released by the Dailymail on Wednesday. Michael's attire makes it clear that it is set in the late 1960s, most probably during the Newark riots that happened in 1967. He was spotted wearing a brunette wig, denim jacket, and necklace.

Creator David Chase is taking fans down memory lane right back to where it all began. We will get to see the events that shaped Tony Soprano into the mob boss he is known and loved for. Since production has just begun, we will get more information about the movie in the near future.

'The Sopranos' aired on HBO from 1999 to 2007 and it is still known as one of the best shows of all time. James Gandolfini became famous for playing Tony Soprano and won many awards for his role. Sadly, the actor passed away in 2013. But now Michael, his son, is taking up his role and looks exactly like his father. We will have to wait and see if his acting is as good though.

The prequel, 'The Many Saints of Newark' is set during the race-riots in 1967 when there were high racial tensions in Newark, New Jersey, mainly between Italian-Americans and African-Americans. Alessandro Nivola plays the role of Dickie Moltisanti in the prequel who was a mentor to the upcoming mobster.

The process of casting young Tony Soprano was not an easy job for the studio according to MovieWeb. The studio had met various actors who auditioned for the role but none had what they were looking for. After Michael auditioned for the role, the studio decided to cast him because he looked like his father and was able to mimic the way he used to behave.

There aren't any trailers that have been released for the prequel as yet since the production has just started. 'The Many Saints of Newark' will be released in theaters on September 25, 2020.
