'NCIS: Los Angeles' Season 12 Episode 1 will see Hetty (Linda Hunt) employ Nell Jones (Renée Felice Smith) for a mysterious assignment and both Sam (LL Cool J) and Callen (Chris O'Donnell) are surprised as much as us to hear that Hetty has employed Special Agent Nell Jones considering she had tendered her resignation in season 11. The promo of the premiere episode of 'NCIS: Los Angeles' sees Sam and Callen get briefed by Special Agent Fatima Namazi (Medalion Rahimi) about a Russian bomber who has disappeared while flying over US soil. Fatima tells both Sam and Callen that the flight had the capacity of carrying nuclear heads and other missiles, however, why it went off the radar is something that has not been found out yet.

If the Russian intelligence team is made aware of this Russian carriage going missing and assumes that the US had struck it down, it can be considered an act of war on Russia and the same could be considered a provocation as well. So it is important that special agents Callen and Sam find out the whereabouts of the Russian carriage so that they can avoid any drastic steps that the Russians might stoop to.

It is while the two of them discuss this case that Fatima informs them about Hetty employing Nellie, and also tells Sam and Callen that she is not aware of how things came to be. She also explains that Nellie will take point on the assignment, and informs Sam and Callen that the two of them will be briefed by the navy as it was arranged by Nell. It would be interesting to see how she fits back in with the team because she had resigned pretty early on in season 11 and hadn't appeared even in the season 11 finale.

The finale episode in itself was not the one that the makers had planned and the show had to wrap up earlier than planned because of production shutting down due to coronavirus. So that might be why we did not see Nell return, but at the time, fans worried that it was the end of the run for Nell Jones in 'NCIS: Los Angeles'. We will also see how things have panned out between Nell and Eric since they moved in together after a long-drawn-out romantic plotline that oscillated between "Will they, won't they". We are also excited to see what part she will play as she returns to work as a Special Agent -- Analyst.

'NCIS: Los Angeles' Season 12 new episodes will air every Sunday on CBS at 8.30 pm ET.
