TWICE Nayeon finally gets first music show win, K-pop fans say 'will always be POPular'

Nayeon's solo debut with 'POP' has been an immense hit as she made history on Billboard charts twice

Nayeon became the first TWICE member to make her solo debut with the lead single ‘POP’ and has become an instant success. With girl group TWICE known to release at least one viral single every year like ‘TT’, ‘Fancy’ or ‘The Feels’, there was no doubt that ‘POP’ would also become a craze on social media from its earworm chorus to its fun dance move. Nayeon also made history with her album ‘Im Nayeon’ as she became the first K-pop soloist to chart in the top 10 of Billboard by debuting at #7. But while the TWICE star was topping charts domestically and internationally, fans could not seem to get her a music show win.

K-pop became popular in South Korea through music shows rather than radio plays. With tons of K-pop acts releasing new music every week and promoting on music shows, a win allows one lucky K-pop act to stand out. And so, much importance is given to a music show win by K-pop labels. But TWICE fans were frustrated as Nayeon seemed to be losing every nomination right up till July 10. Some were even suspicious if the music shows were rigged in order to let lesser charting acts like Kep1er and fromis_9 win. However, Nayeon finally ended up getting her first music show win on July 10.

Nayeon gets first music show win

On July 10, SBS Inkigayo nominated Sunmi’s ‘Heart Burn’, TWICE Nayeon’s ‘POP’ and IVE’s ‘Love Dive’. Nayeon ended up winning with 6922 points. It seems that she seems to be racking up achievements even in the West as at the same time she broke another record on Billboard. On July 11, it was revealed that the TWICE star had become the highest-charting female idol on Billboard Artist 100. She debuted at #5 and is also the second highest-charting female K-pop act in general. ‘POP’ also peaked at #5 on Billboard Japan Hot 100 making it the highest-charting Korean song by a female soloist in history.

Knetizens were happy that Nayeon finally found recognition in her home country as they made comments like, “Finally Nayeonㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ Congrats congrats,” and “Nayeon, you finally got #1! Congrats.” One user wished, “I hope Nayeon knows that yes music show wins are great but at the end of the day her song is charting very well, got great reviews and it’s what matters. Like I hope she doesn’t feel down because of how hard it was to get that win. IVE aside she lost against much less popular acts.” Another user shared, “About time!! Nayeon has been robbed all this week!”

Nayeon you will always be POPular and successful.” Another TWICE fan wrote, “Not her feeling this happy over a music show win when she is literally the first ever korean soloist in history on top 10 Billboard 200, topping Billboard album sales, highest charting kpop female soloist on Billboard artist 100 (#5) etc. 😭 She's so precious 😭 Nayeon best girl.” Similarly, one fan found Nayeon’s reaction cute, “Nayeon after getting top10 on bb200 and being the first kpop soloist to do so: omg once thank u❤️ nayeon after getting a music show win: OMG ONCE THANK YOU GETTING ME A WIN ON MUSIC BANK A DREAM COME TRUE ONCE IS THE BEST.”
