'Mulan' on Disney Plus: No Mushu or songs, unhappy fans say they paid $30 for a 'soulless, mediocre' remake
After what seems like an eternity of a wait, fans finally got to see 'Mulan', though not in the way they expected. The film released on Disney Plus, instead of theatres, due to the crippling coronavirus pandemic. In fact, it wasn't enough to have a Disney Plus subscription, as viewers had to pay $30 to watch the live-action remake.
'Mulan' is based on the ballad of Hua Mulan, the woman who dressed as a man to lead an army to victory against the enemies of her country. As war was considered primarily a masculine activity, history is full of such stories, where women kept their true sex a secret before heading into war. The animated classic found a place in the hearts of the people with its musical numbers such as 'I'll Make A Man Out Of You' and 'Bring Honour To Us All'. However, the live-action remake is devoid of songs as well as Eddie Murphy's Mushu, the chatty dragon. Instead of a dragon, there's a phoenix. There is a flood of mixed and negative reactions on social media as many fans believe that they were made to pay $30 for a "soulless" film.
"$30 for a soulless remake of #Mulan with no Mushu, no musical numbers, no love interest, and the lead actress supports the police brutality in Hong Kong? No thanks. I’ll rewatch the original instead," a fan tweeted.

"What fans been saying all along is true: having #Mushu does (and will) make a whole world of difference — and that song, #Reflection (sung live) too ... gutted to see what they did to my all time favorite Disney’s #Mulan — some characters / scenes are insignificant to the plot," said another.

Some didn't want to see the film at all. "#Mulan I'm so sad bc im not gonna see the movie. I'm not saying that the movie is bad or something like that bc is so similar to the real legend however, if u said is a live-action of Disney's version Mushu, Shang and the song must appear in this film," quipped another user.

"Wow, Mulan was actually disappointing. The animated movie was more realistic than this. You literally just had to copy the script. There was so much potential in it, what a flop. #Mulan," another tweeted.

Others said that it was a "good film". "Just finished #Mulan &kind of took me by surprise. Even though there was no singing, li Shang ,or Mushu, it was a pretty good movie. There was some lines reciting the lyrics of some of the songs that I caught. Of course I had to wait for the credits to hear @xtin goodnight!," a fan wrote.

'Mulan' is streaming on Disney Plus. Watch it, if you must.
